Got in the shop yesterday early and pulled up the stinking weather report and depression struck. Rain coming until infinity and I need to go fishing and the lake was surely going to rise again! Looked at the trees swaying and said.....I'm going. Loaded up and headed to Belton. Ran into Rob Jolliff at the landing. He gripped about the weather being the worst spring since WWII but he had clients and was going to catch fish. Mr. Brown's truck was also in the parking area so I was going to try and avoid areas that they were fishing with clients. The dirty water extended to about McGregor Park because they are releasing water and it is drawing the muddy water down. I headed toward Owl Creek but never got to the ramp and the water had junk in it. Went out a ways and started fishing brush. I was running and gunning. Fish showing up on sidescan but tons of little fish. Found a likely target and began my assault! Little fish causing lots of bumps but I did get below them and would hang a decent fish now and then. The wind was relentless!! I had Lane's plastics on first, but was getting hung up so much I grabbed one of the boxes of jigs that I had from Jerry. They were purposely tied to the easier bending hooks. I had to squeeze a few split shot on to keep them from surfing, but the adjustments were made and I was fishing full throttle!!!!

All fish still had eggs. I tried some spawn areas that had produced before but they were just too muddy and too windy to fish that way. Caught most the fish just into the brush or on the sides. This may be the last chance at spawning fish if the rain all comes. Caught some males but mostly hens. Ran into Rob on the way out and he and his clients had 66. You guys in the area that want to do some fishing around here should call Rob......he knows his stuff. He said he fished jigs but his clients were struggling with minnows. As I understood, Jerry acquired Matthew's business and Chris has since acquired Jerry's if you want some good tied jigs. Lots of good jig guys out there, I just have so many from Jerry I'm set for quite awhile! Like Constant Pursuit Outfitter plastics, my garage smells like Lane is in there making them!!! As Rob said as I was leaving......wish this weather would straighten out.......but oh well, June is coming!!!!

I am, or was planing on fishing the bridge at Leona by kayak Thursday. Do you think it is, or will be to off color?

Way to go Beltonbanger! Never sea seas to amaze me all the nice fish you are capable of catching off Belton. I actually thought about putting in this morning but like you said the weather and rain is going to be here for awhile so thought i better get all the yard work done so Im not dealing with a jungle next time around. Super nice haul and hopefully when the weather does finally clear up hope to see you out there.

I just don't know. They are still dumping a bunch of water out Proctor and that feeds right into Belton. So it very well could be. One of the regulars only caught 3 fish on the bridge when I was there. He went south after that and I never talked to him later. If the wind isn't bad it doesn't hurt to try, I just don't fish that bridge much. You can always try the back of White Flint and along the banks in there.

I sure understand that!!! I can go any day and work around that! So I try and plan accordingly. This year has been a bear for wind, rain and cold fronts. Started catching crappie in mid February and thought it will be a great spring!! NOT!!!!!!!!!! Just no consistency. Waco has been the same. May head to Limestone soon, love the timber and big black crappie.

Some fine slabs right there.
I said after the drought of 2011 that I would never complain about rain again but this has been a awful wet year so far.

I put in at 36 bridge on the 19th. Windy as hell. Terrible. I lasted an hour and gave up. I just might give it another try on Sunday. Hopefully this weeks rain will be minimal and have some nice weather Sunday.

No matter where you go, there you are.
