If you are in Texas, do you realize that orange floats/jugs are reserved for commercial fishermen?

If you are in Texas, do you realize that orange floats/jugs are reserved for commercial fishermen? Good point. Fortunately, pool noodles are available in lots of different colors. The ones in the video are for use in Louisiana and Georgia, but recreational fishers in Texas need to use any color other than orange, per TX fishing regulations. For non-commercial purposes, a jugline must be marked with a free-floating device of any color other than orange. For commercial purposes, a jugline must be marked with an orange, free-floating device. TX also has some gear tag regulations that are more demanding than other states: Gear tag: A tag constructed of material as durable as the device to which it is attached. The gear tag must be legible, contain the name and address of the person using the device and the date the device was set out. Date is not required for saltwater trotlines or crab traps fished under a commercial license. For juglines and freshwater trotlines, properly marked buoys or floats qualify as valid gear tags.

I write on the jugs. A bit of duct tape works fine if you need a smoother surface to write on.

There are 2 of those rigs floating around in Lavon with 2 dead catfish wrapped up in the line. Looks like they been out there for awhile. Absentee fishing at it finest.

Yeah, I like to stay in sight of my jugs even though it isn't required by law in Alabama.

Yeah, I like to stay in sight of my jugs even though it isn't required by law in Alabama. Every kind of fishing has a non-zero rate of accidental mortality. I don't worry about it too much, but taking steps to reduce it is advisable. I've never lost a single jug line, since I usually watch them. But so far this year we've released a couple turtles and a big striped bass. They seemed to survive, but you never really know if a fish or turtle dies soon after being released. Over the years we've had quite a few fish die and float after being released from rod and reel catches. In most places we fish, the catfish population can better support accidental mortality than most game species we target. Not that I advise this, but there are some places we fish that catfish populations are so high and considered nuisance species that anglers targeting game species intentionally kill the catfish before returning them to the water.

Even staying in sight of my jugs one will occasionally get away from me. I always try looking around for it for a good amount of time and search for it next and future trips out but it does happen. Or I have had the case where I could not retrieve the jug because of a safety issue. Try to learn from these instances to minimize the chance it happens again.

Well, I see your point but sometimes those jugs get taken for a ride under the most watchful eyes!
