Hey guys my kids and wife want to try catching some crappie up here on Rayburn. Ive never even tried for them up here. I catch a few bass fishing from time to time, but never really tried. I used to crappie fish lake Houston and we used white/ blue and white yellow. When the water was really stained white/ bubblegum. I tried a white pepper on day but didnt have any takers. Not asking for any top secrets, just a good color to start with so I dont have to buy a 100. Lol thanks for any help I can get! Just want the family to have a little fun.

Color isn't that important IMO. Just get some you do good with at other lakes and they will work at Rayburn too.

Although you will get some to suggest colors don't stay locked on them if they're not workn.....
High contrast, low contrast, natural, bright and dark is the way I look at it, have these colors covered and tie on one until you find what the crappie prefer that day, that moment in that area.....

Exactly!!! Far more times it will be presentation. Light or dark and different weights. Some of the guides use the same color almost every day.

I crappie fish and live on Rayburn and I use Green and black, all white, all green and blue/white. The last color is from Matthew Carroll Mr. Jigum. He said that is a good color for East Texas when he made me some jigs (they are awesome jigs). That man knew how to crappie fish, for sure, not to mention he is a sweetheart of a guy fishing with Jesus now. I use a road runner to search for crappie, if I run over some structure with fish, then I am jigging. With kids the road runners in 1/16th oz will catch bluegill, bass and crappie ... even caught an alligator gar on the road runner on Rayburn. Good luck!

Well took the daughter out today after the rain ended. She was using electric chicken. I was using shad with char tail. She wore me out at first! Great time!! She was so happy! I switched to a white tube and it was on. Caught 30 or so. Several had some kind of sores on them. Red spots. I threw them back. Brought home 12. 6 Were really nice ones.. the other 6 were 11 or so. Nice frying size. A great day! Then showed her how to scale and cut them up. Good times

Awesome I am glad you guys had fun. The ones with sores were a concern of mine too and asking around they are fine to eat (but I filet my crappie and take off the skin), many people just throw them back. So whatever you want to do, the post is probably on here in history as to what the sores are, I forgot.

I hit Rayburn crappie quite a bit throughout the year. Only 2 colors I ever use are the white /chart slab tube from big bite baits (looks like a tube but has a solid body) and Bobby Garland 2 inch baby shad in Milk Monkey. It's kind of a light blue pearl color with tiny blue metal flake. With 1/16 chart jig head. Found a big under water stump loaded up with crappie 2 weeks ago in 18 feet of water and fish are 6 feet down. I have hit it twice now. 1st time my dad and I put 19 keepers in the boat in 15 minutes. Yesterday I hit it and put 25 in the boat in about 30 minutes. I side scanned a few other spots and found several schools from 13' (lots of small crappie) on out to 25'. Usually have rods rigged with 8 pound flouro carbon or 10 pound braid. Have been flipping it out6-8 feet on slack line and if the line stops sinking set the hook. Otherwise you can really feel the thump on the braid.

I believe The best color is the one nearest the crappies mouth or what you have confidence in.
