I converted a 1958 Blue Star 14 runabout into a Low-Tech Flats Skiff. I cut the gunwales down to the seat level, removed the center seat, added a flat deck with a center cockpit. I have a 1961 Johnson 5.5 Twin on it, and it tops out at 10 mph. I'm looking for a cheap 15-20 HP, so I'll get a little more speed. Island Jim

Sweet!

Thanks, everyone! Since that pic was taken, I have acquired a 1982 Merc 9.8 outboard. It'll go 15 mph, which is fast enough for me to scoot the flats. It's a great fishing platform, and drifts really nice with a 36" drift sock set abeam, two rods front and rear, plus me casting the potholes. Draws about 5 inches with the outboard lifted. I call it my Low-Tech Pollack Skiff. IslandJim

That's an incredible transformation. That boat is slick looking. Well done.

That is cool! I was going to ask how you got parts for that old Johnson. But since you changed motors, sounds like that might have answered my question. I got an old Evinrude I think I’m going to have to bury. My grandpas motor. Tons of memories but parts are impossible. Great work!

Coolarrow: Sorry, I just saw you responded to my old post. You can get almost anything for old outboards from marineengine.com. I refurb'ed the Johnson and the Merc thru them. Their Illustrated Parts Breakdowns are super! The best thing I did for the Johnson was scrap the points and condensers and install semiconductor sensors, originally made for chain saws by Aussies. The ones I used were for Kawasaki, bought online somewhere. Almost every magneto motor built today uses these, rather than points and condensers. No moving parts to wear.

When my stimulus check came from Uncle Donald, I got stimulated and bought an almost brand-new Yamaha 15 4-stroke for Tin Star. It'll go well over 20 now, and it's quiet.

By the way, the Johnson 5.5 is running well on my old boat, a 12-foot aluminum skiff my Dad bought new in 1959. My sister has it in West Texas.

Good luck, IslandJim, on the Texas Riviera
