Lots of posts in the thread so in case anyone missed it this little pond is marked with numerous signs "Catch and Release only"

Also again I was a long way (30-45 minutes from my truck and another about 20 to the house) so not sure how edible a uncooler-ed fish would be by then. What do you think? How long can a dead fish last without refrigeration before its not safe to eat?

I e-mailed the TPWD and told them the situation. I asked what the proper course of action would be. I got this reply...

Please leave it and allow nature to take its course.

I know, the point of the whole thread was to get advice on how to avoid gut hooking fish, and how to undo the bad hook when it happens. I got tons of advice. But yeah I know that ultimately things like this happen.

I looked it up, the nearest fish vet clinic is way up north of Dallas, I wouldn't have made it in time. Care-flite didnt have a helicopter with a aquarium in it.

Well, it was "Catch and Release". It was not "Catch and Release and Survive". You were ok from the outset with no worry. It shows the folly of "Catch and Release". You can't avoid an occasional gut hook and hence loss of fish. Sometimes they pick it up and you can't tell. It happens to me rarely but it does happen.

It is honestly disgraceful that you would harm an innocent bass.

Gentlemen, there will be a Memorial Service this Saturday at 5:00pm at Prestonwood Baptist Church in PLano for the sadly recently decapitated Mr. L.M. Bass. Please RSVP as we except a crowd of over 2500. In attendance will be the Bass Brothers Family of Ft. Worth. Our prayers and condolences are with them. RIP
