if You buy a car out of state and bring it to Texas what is the process? I assume you pay the local sales tax and then take it to the DMV with proof of purchase to register it? What kind of fees are involved?

The fees are no different than if you bought it in-state. The difference is that they must be paid out of pocket where if you finance and buy locally the fees can be rolled into the loan.
The fees would be the same as if you bought in state and paid cash.

I never went to the DMV. Best I can remember, get proof of insurance and inspection, take it with title info to your local tax collector. 6.25% sales tax plus the usual license and registration....then buy a front license plate bracket if it's from Oklahoma.

pretty sure I didn't have to pay sales tax on the dodge when I moved down here, owned it outright and just transfered title to Tx. and paid for tag if I remember right.

The base registration fee in Texas is $50.75 plus $1 for TexasSure, the electronic insurance verification program and other Department of Public Safety initiatives. So, total state registration is $51.75 but counties may add other fees to this cost. The state portion of your vehicle's inspection fee will be due at this time. As a new resident, you also will pay sales tax-related fees required by the state's Comptroller of Public Accounts. Sales tax fees on a vehicle can be $90 or the difference between your previous state's sales tax and the Texas sales tax.https://txdmv.gov/motorists/new-to-texas

Hop,
You moved here from out of state and registered a vehicle you were bringing with you. You already had out of state license, title and registration on the vehicle. The link you provided works in that case.
In this case he is already a Texas resident. He can not buy a vehicle from out of State to avoid Texas sales tax.

More then likely it's because you paid a higher percentage when you purchased it. I went through that when I moved here years ago. First thing DMV does is look up the tax rate of the county and state you had it registered in. If its more then 6.25% then you don't pay, if its less then you pay the difference.

What kind of fees are involved? not sure how it works for used vehicles, but for a new vehicle, you don't pay the tax there. you end up paying it here when you register it. I bought my truck from a dealership in OK, brought it down here. when i registered it, i cut a check for somewhere around $2-$3k and walked out tags in hand.

The fees would be the same as if you bought in state and paid cash. One difference is it will have to be inspected regardless of whether or not the other state does inspections. At least this is what the lady told me for my boat trailer. She said it applies to all vehicles being registered from out of state.

All vehicle registrations must have a valid state inspection.

All vehicle registrations must have a valid state inspection. Yes it is. Vehicles with valid Texas inspections would not need to have it done before registering. Even with a valid out of state inspection it has to be done in Texas before registering.
