keep in mind that fish are a sustainable resource.....since the beginning of time, man has been harvesting fish from lakes, rivers and oceans...focus your concern toward those responsible for allowing grass spraying and placing grass carp in our lakes...

That is truly the most bizarre narrative I have ever heard.
The end times are truly near.

I "went all Dexter" as you put it because if somehow the poor thing was still conscious in some way and just couldn't move or something I wanted to make sure and end its suffering quickly. I though it was merciful, but I guess it is illegal.

I will try to revive any fish I am planning on catching and releasing size don't matter (at least my wife says so)

I know it happens I'm not like suicidal or anything over it. I was looking for advice on how to avoid gut hooking, and tips on how / when to safely unhook the fish.

Fish dont have a complex enough nervous system to feel pain. If they did you wouldnt be able to catch the same fish multiple times. And after being caught once and feeling all the pain the fish probably would
Be very hard to catch again. I do feel bad for any animal or creature that suffers or struggles but its just something thats going to happen if you Fish. But dont get caught up to much in it because fish dont have feelings they dont have relationships they have instincts and are hard wired to feed, reproduce and maintain a comfortable living environment so they can do those things. Thats all Fish think about day after day after day.

You didnt say what lake you were on but a lot of lakes have slot limits and want this size fish taken out of the lake anyway so the larger fish can get larger. That was probably a 14 or 15 inch bass. Dont beat yourself up over killing a fish this size. Most lakes need a LOT of these fish harvested and taken out every year.
