So anyone have any ideas before I send them to get worked on what is wrong with
two reels I have that when I go for a long cast, they make a horrible screeching
noise (almost like a screech owl!) The lure gets out there, but it sounds like something
is horribly wrong on the inside.................any help would be greatly appreciated.

Could be the brake shoes...could be the friction washers...if it is a shimano with brake pins one or more could be loose

sounds like one of the spool shaft bearings is toast. pull the spool and the tension knob and drop some oil on each bearing and see if the noise changes. if it does, replace the bearings.

My first guess would be spool bearings.

Thank you,

Flip the copper plate under the tension knob on the non-reel handle side.

If I was having this problem I'd send them to The Tackle Smith to be professionally cleaned inspected and fixed, by a professional, then be set for a number of years. I've used his service and it is top notch.

Willing to bet this is a prime case of the old Shimano reels with the gold spool is the brake pins start to come out and make that horrible casting sound and makes the reel no longer smooth. Have dealt with about 30 of these over the past years.

Sounds like the reel is dry and needs oil.
Try oiling the bushing or bearings and see if that helps.

Just one more cast!

It would really help to know what make and model of reel it is, to offer the best advice.

Great comments so far. It is hard to diagnose without a make/model.

Also, I see you are in Dallas. If you get a wild hair, you can always drop it off here.

Pull the bearings, clean, then put half a drop of oil on them.

If that doesn't fix it, I have nothing.
We used to keep throwing our old round Ambassadeur reels. When they started screaming the bushings needed oil.

Yes sir. And that is one of the reasons I keep using them.

Ps, I still have and use multiple Ambassadeurs that are all bushings. Just saying... ...
