Anyone owned one? Likes, dislikes, things you wish you realized before you bought it?

My wife has had a couple over the last 10 years. All were limited 4wd models. Best truck she ever owned. Neither one ever went back to dealer for repair. Very trouble free. Rides well for a truck based SUV. No complaints and will buy another. I do wish they would offer a power back lift gate.

My wife is still driving her 2008. 120,000 miles and runs like a champ. Gets 22 mpg and all we have done to it is a battery and tires along with regular maintenance.

I bought one for my son. They dont fare well against mailboxes or fence gates. I should have bought something that was armored like in MadMax or something.

Other than that, pretty good.

My wife had a 2005 4Runner years ago with the V6 that was an awesome vehicle. Now she has the Lexus GX460 which is built on the 4Runner frame, with the V8 and all wheel drive. You cant go wrong with the 4Runner.

My wife has a 2011 that has never been in for a repair, only put on a set of tires and a battery. I am driving her previous 2003 one and am getting ready to put breaks on it for the first time. Have put 3 sets of tires and two batteries. The dash on the 03 got gummy but Toyota replaced it free of charge. All are the V-6 and get around 22 on the highway and 19 around town. Needless to say when she wants a new on it will be another 4Runner. By the way I am pulling a Champion 188 DCX with the 2003 and get around 12 MPG.

Toyota, can't beat them for dependability. Never had the 4Runner but on my 3rd Tacoma. I've owned 10 Toyotas in my lifetime. Most dependable thing on the road mechanically.

Downside to the 4Runner to me is overall cost. Toyota Motor Corp is proud of 'em.

We had a 2004 until 2010, traded it in a bought a 2010 4 runner, still have it and at 170000 miles still a very solid vehicle.
In 2015 we bought a new Tahoe, our next vehicle will a Toyota--

I'm sorry Toyota, Please forgive me, I want to come back to you!

They do hold their value pretty darn well, though.

I've got an '04. and have had endless problems with the engine. Cyl 5 misfires. Seems to be an issue related to that year.

The only problem or flaw I have noticed in the new 4-Runners is the back seat sits high,at 6'1" my head touches the ceiling when riding in the back seat.

call it what you will...he is not definitely not anywhere near the top of the list for QB's that I would choose needing a FG or touchdown drive late in the game.

Great vehicles. Started to by one this last fall. Upon further examination they just didn't have enough room for hauling luggage etc. in the back. Went with a GMC Z71 4X4 crew cab with 6 1/2 foot bed. Added ARE shell. Well pleased.

I've got a 2007 with 167k on the clock. The water pump was weeping at about 150k so I had a new one installed. That's the only thing I've ever done to it besides normal upkeep (oil, battery brakes, etc). Best vehicle I've ever owned. I don't know what years you're looking at but be aware that there are some reports of bad head gaskets on the 2004 V6 models. They changed the gasket design or something at some point in 2005 and it's not been an issue since then.

t4r.org is a very active 4Runner forum - definitely go over there and check it out if you're considering buying one.

I have a 2011 SR5 4WD. It has been a great vehicle. My first SUV. The only thing that caught me off guard was how big the blind spots are compared to the cars and trucks I had before. Took a bit to adjust. Otherwise, I have had no issues. My average MPG is 19. Been great for towing a boat and as a hunting vehicle. It rides very well (surprisingly well actually). The only thing I might have done different is get the upgraded radio package.

If it is the JBL radio then you are not missing anything. I think they were better in 2011 than in my 2017. I am glad I just have the standard system. I added a PNP amp from Taco Tunes, Infinity Kappa 60s xovers, and a Fosgate 10" sub. It blows away any factory system. I went the Taco Tunes sub and wiring package only because it is PNP. I debated for months about whether or not to use their amp. Neighbor has one that he bought off another neighbor. 300k+ and a couple of timing belts and ujoints is it. Unfortunately it is an earlier model that has the belt.

Ever notice in the bush or over in foreign countries out in the desert they all drive one kind of vehicle, the most dependable Toyota.

Yeah I have a 2012 Tacoma with the premium sound and it is great for factory. My wife bought a 2017 RAV4 with premium sound and it is nowhere close to sounding like mine very disappointing.

They have a 5000lb towing capacity
They will squat some, but you’re fine towing up to a 18-19 foot aluminum.

I had a 2000 that I drove until 2015 - 313,000 miles. Was starting to have some issues. Great vehicle, but i didn't like the looks of the new ones, so i went with a Subaru Outback. Very happy with it.

My opinion of the Toyota 4Runners in general:

1. Cost: Expensive but hold value well so that's a wash.

2. Engine: Not all that powerful, not that great of mileage.

3. Very reliable.

4. Conservative interiors. Not flashy or sexy. That could be good or bad. Just an observation.

Close friend of mine has an older 4Runner with 300k+ miles (it has needed typical maintenance including some things most people normally don't run into, but most people don't put 300k on their vehicles). Mother in law drove one past 200k and replaced it with another 4Runner.

If it fits your budget I see no reason not to check them out.

So, if you get tired of buying vehicles.

Buy a Toyota.

I have a 2017 Highlander Limited and it has a power lift gate, I don't understand why the 4Runner doesn't.

Depends which model. Some are still made/assembled in Japan

I did 2 Tacomas and a Tundra. Not sure where 4 Runbers are made. I think they are still made in Japan. I used to be a diehard buy American. Ford pushed my switch to Toyota. Why buy inferior American made vehicles. Maybe you like to also support dealer service centers.

4Runners and Land Cruisers are still made in Japan. Tacomas and Tundras are made here in the US. Texas actually.

My dad was a diehard GM guy growing up. Everything we bought was GM. My first truck was a Chevy. And after all the oil leaks, fuel pumps, transmission problems, etc. I decided to try something different and haven't really looked back. I do like the looks of the new Silverados but I just don't know if I can stomach buying one.

Needless to say when she wants a new on it will be another 4Runner. By the way I am pulling a Champion 188 DCX with the 2003 and get around 12 MPG.

I’m renting one in CO this week and impressed with the performance in snow and on ice. My only complaint is the aerodynamics covers the rear window with spray and wiper is too small to clear it .
