I see a lot of products and tips that are designed to keep a plastic bait on the hook. Little tiny spiral things to screw the bait into, and people using super glue, Roland Martin even showed to use a barrel swivel for this purpose.

Is it really a big problem? Has anyone ever lost a fish because the worm slipped off the shank?

I was looking at picking up some of the spiral screw on type ones. However it seem to me that putting that device through the eye of a worm hook with a straight shank will make it impossible to rig the worm straight. If you use the screw the shank will then be in the way right?

Is it really a problem? What do you guys use?

I've never heard it spun as a fish losing issue. I always thought it was a plastic saving issue. Instead of a plastic tearing at the nose, those keepers are supposed to keep the bait on the hook so they don't get thrown around when you catch a fish. Supposedly makes a soft plastic last a lot longer. I've never tried any of them.

I use the Owner Centerpin Twist-locks. It makes it much easier and faster to center your small worms on the head of the screw to begin the twist. This saves time and some accuracy of getting it center perfectly.

Everyone has there preferences that have been using these type devices for years on particular rigs. Many beginners will have quite a number of these devices in their hook boxes that they will find that just does not serve the purpose. Here are the things that I want to accomplish by using the above suggested Twist-Lock.
- I use them on small straight worms and on a couple of Trick Worm rigs.
- I purchase the medium size for finesse and trick worms.
- I use them on some of the Round Swim Plastics. Purchase the Large Size.
- Smaller diameter baits center up fine on straight shank hooks with the Twist-Lock attached.
- It is better to use these hooks below.

I would honestly say that it is preference and it would definitely be used to help save the soft plastic and a little bit for rigging accuracy. I have honestly only used them when using soft plastic swim baits or soft plastic frogs. I have also used them when fishing an EWG hook with a soft plastic bait.

To give an example of saving the bait, you have some soft plastic swim baits that cost upwards of $10-$20 a piece. Now granted these are the larger soft plastic swim baits that you are using 10/0 hooks on, but having that twist lock on there can help save the bait for continued use. Example: Smash-Tech Convict swim bait

I would also say that the twist lock can help keep the bait up on the hook and prevent it from sliding down after continuous casts or pulling through cover.

I had them on flipping hooks but just recently started to have one on a worm hook. Let me tell you they work and are worth it. There are numerous DIY ways to do them or you can buy hooks with them. I pulled a 6" Kriet Tail worm through flooded bushes a lot the last couple of weeks and I can promise it made a big difference. I was using the Mustad KVD hooks with their version of a bait holder. It made enough of an impact that I will be making my own and trying the Roland Martin method with the swivel. I usually do not buy the best of the best hooks, Eagle Claw EWG are great little hooks and I use a lot of Academy hooks on my worms and I can promise I will be making bait holders.

Screw locks may be the absolute best plastic keepers but do come with a downfall. Take a shakey head for example. They have screw locks that do hold the plastic/ act as a weed guard etc. the problem is they shorten the gap between the hook point and the end of the screw lock giving the fish a harder target to hit to actually hook the fish. If you use screw locks simply cut them down to where there is 3/4 to 1 full turn of the screw lock vs the 5 or 6 wraps they come with. This will now open the gap giving the fish more to bite on to with a higher percentage of hooking up. I do believe you miss more fish with the traditional full length screw lock. The screw locks that run down the shank of the hook is probably the absolute best, but your typically fishing a swimbait type bait. Thats my two cents for what it’s worh.

If you like constantly fixing your worm on the hook it isn't an issue.

I like the screw lock ones that stick out from the eyelet while using a horny toad or fluke as it keeps it running straight. I usually add a drop of super glue to keep it from getting ripped off. If punching using the straight shank hooks I think its on the Mustad hooks that have the piece that sticks up that helps hold the bait. Again adding a drop of super glue helps.

Mainly for me its a confidence thing that I know I won't have to constantly adjust my bait cast after cast. I don't use expensive soft plastics but still don't want to lose em!

I prefer using the screw locks to not using anything except a bare hook. Like Donald said it centers the bait on the hook better. And the bait will not slide down.
