I have a 55hp Yamaha on 16 ft flatbottom. I am worried that if I hit a log or rock that it will tear out my lower unit or worse when I run it in the river. Is it a good idea to disable the trim so the motor will kick up. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

I'm not sure about disabling the trim, but I would recommend running an aluminum prop so that you can tear up props instead of lower units. Next I would say add a hydraulic jack plate so that you can run the motor high when your worried about stumps and rock.

Perfection is a moving target.

Get a kick plate I have a Vance and its stacked on top of a jack plate . Worth every penny. Hit a log stump sand bar etc and it lets the motor kick up and slide over it. That way you can still use your trim while running. I would hate to run my boat with out but again I run my motor high and fast its about a inch higher now than it was in that picture [Linked Image]
