I have a wild hair to catch some crappie with my fly rod.
I tied up some jigs with no weight

Anybody fish for them that way?

I fish for Crappie with the fly rod. Ive caught a few on unweighted type of patterns near the surface on things like deer hair divers or bucktail streamers. Most of the Crappie I get come on Balanced leech type of jigs. Those have a little bead on an extension forward of the hook eye. Most of the Crappie I get are in water 6 feet deep or less just slow moving the jigs through the pay off zone.

Looks like theres a small bead chain on a straight shank hook. Is that enough to allow the hook point to ride up?

Heres a photo or two of the Balanced leech. [Linked Image]
