If I set up my new chip for my HB989 SI, can I set it up for Lowrance if I upgrade later?

Far as I'm aware, their is not a chip/card set up.

If your HB or Lowrance unit is Navionics compatible the unit itself will give you a menu option to select the type of card desired to be displayed. Make sure your units have the most current MFG software updates installed.

Here is a screenshot of the Navionics/Humminbird compatibility page. Unfortunately I don't see a HB 989 unit on there as being compatible for use with a Navonics card.

Did you maybe have a typo and your unit is a 998? If not double check with Navionics folks.

As Tbird stated above, your Navionics card is universal from Humminbird to Lowrance, as long as it is within a few years old and has the micro chip inside the larger holder. Most of the new Lowrance units are micro SD where as Humminbird is a full size SD, as long as the card is no older than a few years old you can just remove the micro SD from the full size SD holder and it is no problem.
