Welcome to the Forum Kent. I have been fishing the main lake with around Cranes Mill and not going up the river. I have noticed a few boats going up river but have not talked to anyone about their catches. The river flow is good . That should make it as good as it is going to be at the rapids. Good Luck.

I'll be heading out this weekend to give a report. Last year, it was so hit or miss on Canyon. Fished every weekend for 6 weeks. A couple of old guys who looked experienced would say that some days they limit out and the next, nothing. So I am not convinced the Canyon Lake run is steady like other places.

I never fish up the river. Main lake around cranes mill and mouth of the river by fishing dock is where its at. Gotta say I havent fished that lake this year. But the 3 years I did fish it, I have never made it too the rapids everyone talks about. I can catch enough spawning fish on the main lake without ever going past the first bend in the river. This cold weather should keep the fish out of the river a little longer. Calm cloudy days in March are some of the best top water action Ive ever seen on canyon lake.

Hi Steven, I know you mostly targeted stripers and sandies when you lived here but did you ever catch crappie in that area? Since the dock is called 'Crappie Dock' I would think there's some in that area. Of course it's an entirely different method of fishing. Wonder if anyone catches them at the crappie dock?

I can answer that. Yes, crappie can be caught at the crappie dock brush pile.. It's just like any other place, sometimes you haul them in, sometimes you don't. Of course, the crappie dock is heavily fished. Sometimes at night by people willing to walk down there, and back up which is the hard part since you have to leave your car at the gate.

I'm not much for fishing big crowds, was bad enough below the dam fishing for the stocker trout this year. So what's the story on the crappie dock, do they have submerged bushes and such all around it to draw them in?

Yes, it is a fishing dock built over one of the 44 brush pile fish attractors that TP&W has put throughout the lake. The brush pile is not all around it but rather directly under the open fishing hole in the middle of the dock. The crowd is not so bad weekdays, but weekends can be quite crowded as it is the only functional such place to fish in the entire lake. Most people use minnows, a few use jigs. Cats, whites, LMB, and stripers are also sometimes caught there.

My sister and I put in at Ramp 11 at 8AM today and fished from the rapids and downstream to 15 foot depths. We fished mostly with live minnows and some with artificial. Skunked. 8 boats total up he river. Spoke to a couple of other skunkees and one guy that caught 3 males. We left at noon.
Water temp was 56F. Wind out of the south.
Recommendation wait a week if you are considering this run.

The crazy weather we've had isn't helping. Just a few days ago it was freezing and now it's in the 80's, so if it keeps this up it will bust loose quickly. Probably won't be a prolonged run like most other lakes though, and you have to hit it right or miss it.
Just one more cast!

Thanks for sharing. More cold weather coming next week, not good.
