Just a tidbit for thought and discussion. Definitely not trying to stir something up. I have the Livescope and love it. Now with that said.... smile Since Livescope will definitely increase the catch ratio of crappie fishing because you no longer stay fishing where there are no fish. you know the exact depth to fish at. You know when to leave your bait still because you can see a fish looking at it. With all that, your catch ratio will definitely increase by a huge amount. SOOO, will all this have a serious impact on the future of crappie fishing? Will it start to hurt catching really big crappie because you will be catching the big ones and only throwing back the undersize fish? Just throwing this out there to see what everyone thinks about it. Hope to stimulate some good discussion.

I think that the last few years of fishing technology has definitely defined new catch ratios...side imaging, spot lock, and now Livescope is rendering Crappie defenseless. I think bigger fish will be caught because its easier to fish more spots now, run and gun crappie fishing will be the standard going forward.
I know now that when I pull up to a spot if the fish are there, what depth, and how many. LiVESCOPE has just scratched the surface of future fishing, not only
crappie but all species. I wonder what effect it will have on professional fishing ?? Time will tell......

I don't think it means an increased catch ratio. I can fish where they are at and know the depth with my normal 2d and down imaging unit but I still have to make them bite. A lot of people say that for every fish they catch there are several others that wouldn't or spooked off. If fish are a keepers most of the time they are kept and I don't think livescope will mean more big crappie catches. This is all just my opinion but I don't feel like it will really make a difference. There are times it will help catch fish and there are times it will slow you down.

I don't think it will hurt much. Crappie are very prolithic and repopulate rapidly. A few will catch more but more will be thrown back. Most of the fish we catch are released.
What it definitely will do is make fishing more fun. Like video games on the water. We will also find fish in places we never bothered to fish before.

When the first flashers came out 50 or so years ago people were predicting gloom and doom for the fish. Trying to outlaw them. Every advance and improvement since has improved the catching but we still have good fishing, just poor fishermen.

Enjoy.

I think it will be good for the crappie.
My opinion is crappie can not be over fished. The more taken out the better they do.
Panoptix make catching your 25 easy . The more fish taken out the more food left for the ones lefy

I do not think it will have any effect on fishing. Just my two cents. 2cents

Could help the crappie fishing .I live in Weatherford and fish Lake Weatherford for crappie enough to know some excellent and productive spots. The caveat is we have to ketch 40 plus fish to take home 7 or eight keeper fish. Fish that are over 12 inches. The lake is full of bait, however, year after year the catch to keeper ratio is static. Pulling more fish out of the lake due to better technology available to the masses could put the ratio to one to one ???
I don't know, there may be a game management biologist chime in .

I don't think it will affect it much. The average fisherman cannot afford one.

On average, your heart beats 100,000 times a day. One day, one of those heartbeats will be your last. Then what?

The answer is found in Jesus Christ who said "I am come that they might have life, and that they might have it more abundantly." John 10:10

Absolutely NOT, will it hurt the future of crappie fishing. I've had one for five months now, and while it will definitely help you to eliminate sterile water (and does help you to see where fish are), it will not catch the fish for you. It has taught me several things about crappie. Crappie are a little spookier than I thought. If you're running you TM and spot a crappie(s) and hit spot lock...your TM will reverse and blow a lot of water. Fish will leave. If you drop a jig directly in front of a crappie, or just below him, fish will generally leave. If you think right side is right side and vice versa on your Garmin graph...you're wrong, moving your jig into location is different than you think. And it goes on from there. If someone tells you that they know everything that they need to know from LiveScope, stop listening because they don't know what they're talking about. While the units may be "plug and play", the 'learning' is much more difficult.

So no, don't worry about the crappie, as they'll be there for your Grandchildren to catch. Good fishin' everyone......

While it should make it easier to find the crappie, determine their interest level and eliminate unproductive water, I still believe that the species/fishing should be fine for the following reasons:

1) Weather has such a tendency to dictate crappie behavior rendering technology to reap minimal benefits on many outings. I for one feel like mother nature protects them.
2) Most lakes there are so many places (including up and down creeks/rivers) for large populations of crappie to migrate/reside that are not known, understood by anglers.
3) Fish/Game management can continue to monitor populations and determine if reduced limits or increased introduction is needed.

My concern is more in the area of invasive species (like salvinia). Nevertheless this is a really good thread/discussion.

For many years crappie fishermen were considered the poor (and dumb) element of the fishing community. Tie up to a tree or bridge and spend the day hoping a few fish would find them. NOT TRUE today. Crappie fishermen spend big money on fancy boats with expensive electronics and have learned to find the fish, not wait to be found.

Most boats will eventually (soon) have this technology. Price will drop as competition increases.

Just my opinion.

Great question. It will definitely improve my personal catch rate. But I mainly fish for sport (few exceptions of course); so the population won't get depleted because of people like me.

However, if we do a calculation (make up some reasonable numbers): that 20% of boats will have it, and they improve average catch rate by 50%, that's a 10% net more catch rate. If Crappie population is static (probably a bad assumption), TPWD also monitors the population and will impose tighter/looser limits to keep the population healthy. So it will be affected by some amount. Another factor is with technology, people are more productive for each hour of fishing, so they may spend more time fishing because it's a lot more enjoyable. Hummmm...

If it hurts it, then Im going to do my part to decimate the population. Its the least I can do.
