Hey, Making a run to Port Mansfield on March 11-14. What are the odds of me catching finger mullet in the bays or menhaden? Is the water too cold for cast-netting? Will I need to just buy bait at the Marina? Not a problem during the summer as we can always catch enough baits with cast nets, but I haven't been to the salt in that area in the Spring for many moons.

I am in Rockport and currently see very little bait most of the time. Mansfield may be different but I would plan on buying bait or using artificials.

I was throwing a cast net on Galveston Bay this past weekend. The bait is pretty thin right now. I was catching what I initially thought were tiny glass minnows, but they were actually tiny shad. I bet the bait really shows up later this month as the weather warms.

Bait usually shows up a little better in April and May.

I'd go ahead and buy it for now or just use lures. Croaker should start showing up at the bait stands later this month.
