Fished Newmans bottom today and caught only 7 white bass (3 keepers). I saw a about 2-3 fishermen with a full stringer but most were like me with only a few. Today is a holiday so the banks were crammed. It seemed like every nice hole around a creek bend had 3-4 fishermen spread out even if you walk way upstream towards Irwin. Most hits on my go to lure occurred near the center of the creek.

Thanks to all that helped last week. me and the wife went Saturday after lunch and ended up with 10 all from one spot down stream from Irwins. They never would take a lure caught all on minnows. Gonna have to try again soon it was fun.

Last year you went out with that magical lure and caught 70. This year you caught 7. That pretty much sums up the type of season we have had so far. Very disappointing so far.

Once I get this white bass fishing fever thing going it sure is hard to stop fishing for these guys. Today marks the third day in a row I have stayed home and I know I have to much on my list to do tomorrow as well. I might be able to squeeze in a trip on Friday, we will see. I sure am itching to get that rod tip bent again though. Last few trips it has been slow or the best way to describe it like this, you really had to search for a good hole where they were somewhat active and they would strike your bait.

I heard that! My creek looked awesome for about a week.. only caught a few so far (last week) and then it rains again.
Good thing trout derby this weekend. Back to shoulder to shoulder fishing for a couple days.

Trout derby sounds like fun. Is it on the Guadalupe River below Canyon Lake?

That lure has served me well. Last April I tore up the white bass on the rio grande river with it. Was fishing the spillway of caballo reservoir in New Mexico. But I still think it is more the fishermans skill than the lure 😆. At least I like to think so.

Went fishing after work today. Went to Irwin as I didnt have time to walk down to newmans. Very few people there. Started at 5 and left at dark. Caught 11 working the horseshoe. No big females.

I'm tempted to go today before the rains start. It might get messy if we get some hard down pours like they forecast.

How do the creeks look?
All muddy?

We're going for sure on Saturday, rain or shine.
Going to camp at Nails SP also and do some fishing again on Sunday morning.

Since my son is coming as well, I'm thinking of buying some live minnows to up the chances.
I want to keep him interested and the only way that'll happen if he's catching fish.

I made a trip over to Irwin bridge this afternoon and did pretty good, fished downstream and I ended the trip with 30 in all. My buddy who I fish with a lot took home a limit. I did not keep mine because it is way too hard on me to haul fish all over the place. We walked a good ways downstream picking up one here, two there kind of deal. I did catch five out of one hole, otherwise it was one here two over there type thing. Water is pretty clear which I like, the fish shot up from the bottom and grabbed that thing. I was able to watch fish grab the bait on several occasions. I really like it when I can see them grab it. Maybe I can get another trip in before the rains come which I will have to play by ear and see how this all unfolds. What I need to do is this, just keep 14 fish. I think I will do ok with that amount of fish and it will also allow me to make two good bags of fish fillets for the freezer.

Here is another little tip that I do while fishing for whites, I smash the barb on my hook. I do this for two reasons.
1. It is very easy to get the fish off my hook and if I throw them back then it does less harm to the fish.
2. It also allows me to get it off tree branches when I accidently pitch it into one. Now when I hook something on the bottom, no matter what it is, it is pretty much toast, I will either lose it or bend the hook which I can bend back in a few seconds.
But as far as the fish getting off the hook by themselves, I have had a few throw the hook and flip back into the water. But that's just a few out of a bunch, so it is no big deal to me. But I like to smash my barbs on hooks when ever I'm out fun fishing. 99% of the time they will not get off as long as you keep some light tension on the fish at all times.
