The last 3 nights of flounder gigging have been slower, but we are still getting limits. The fish have really spread out this week, and we have had to cover a bunch of ground and hit lots of spots to locate the flounder. Fish are in small groups of 2-3, and then long stretches with nothing. Winds were volatile, constantly changing directions and speed, making it hard to stick with a game-plan each night. Dense sea fog was also a problem, making for slower navigation between fishing spots. Flounder size is getting better, with a few fish in the 17-20" range showing up the last few nights. Fish size should continue to increase going into March as spawning fish return from the Gulf. I look for warm/stable weather periods to produce well in the coming weeks, with cold/windy weather making things slower.
2/15/2019I had repeat customer Lorrie R. group of 3 onboard tonight. Conditions were poor, with SSW wind at 15mph, normal tide levels, and dense blowing fog after 8pm. Water clarity was poor and the flounder were widely scattered. Hard sand and oyster bottom produced best tonight. We ended with a 15 flounder limit plus 4 sheesphead and 1 black drum by 12:30am. We found some nice size flounder, with 8 in the 16-18" range.
2/16/2019I had new customer Nancy F. group of 5 onboard tonight. Conditions were poor, with NNE wind at 15mph and normal tide levels. Eventually, the wind calmed down to ENE at 5mph around 11pm and the sea fog was about as bad as it gets. We ran all over the place, only finding a couple broad areas holding any numbers of flounder. Mud bottom produced best tonight. We ended with a 25 flounder limit plus 1 sheepshead by 12:30am. We had some nice size flounder again tonight, with the largest at 20".
2/17/2019I had new customer Andy M. group of 4 onboard tonight. Conditions were horrible, with NE wind at 25mph, low tide levels, and cold temps in the low 50's. Clear water was tough to find tonight, and the areas that were clear weren't holding many fish. After struggling to find fish in the gusty winds for 3 hours, and conditions continuing to deteriorate, I called the trip short at 9:15pm. We ended with 4 flounder, and I gave the group a substantial discount on the trip.
