I haven't fishing for trout in years. Typically how long does it take for the ponds to get fished out? I was thinking about taking my 4 year old out to try to catch some but the pond was stocked on 1/5. is it even worth trying for them? I don't want him to not have a good chance to catch some.

probably about a week depending on the pond/lake.

got skunked for the 6th time this year at Mary Jo Peckham. unless you count the 6" plastic rainbow trout lure i snagged off the bottom. lol

they just stocked yesterday, i went after work around 4pm, stayed till 5:30pm. saw the guy next to me catch 2, plus 1 he had caught before i got there. saw the cormorants eat 3 good sized trouts. didn't see anyone else catch any.

I haven't had much luck at all fishing for those trout at Mary Jo.
If I'm able to get even 1 I feel like I've accomplished something lol.
I throw all kinds of inlines and the small 3" pink trout worms, and the yellow and pink trout bites on another rod and dont get squat.
Just gotta get in the right spot where the trout are schooling up I guess.
The cormorants eat pretty well though lol.

I too have not had much luck for trout at Mary Jo. There are so many other places to hit winter trout in the Houston area that I dont even bother fishing there anymore.

It was a different world when we were boys and girls....

Fished the stocking at Rowlett Community park pond Tuesday. Fished with the fly rod mostly slow presentation was best, water clarity wasnt terrible for that pond. Bite was ok better for some using the right presentation. I caught nothing on a white rooster tail with a spinning setup. I caught maybe 10 trout with near deer flies tried different colors bight colors got the most bites especially chartreuse. Watched a guy next to me catch possibly a 100 trout it was embarrassing lol. Guy was crushing it....best I could tell his presentation was a crappie jig in chartreuse under bobber. Whatever it was it was killing it. After a while I decided to load up and drive down to Harry Myers park and give the small ponds there a try but had a big zero other than a little sunfish that hit a rooster tail. Planning to try some other local stockings this month.

I would like to share a simple and very effective rig for trout. I have been using it for years and always try to pass it on.
Tie a # 10 single hook to the end of your line. I use 6 pound test. Then crimp a single double ought size sinker to your line about three feet up. Don't know what the size is in lead sinker jargon but it's also about the size of a large pea.
You should be able to slide it up and down the line with a little effort.
I use floating type power bait. Almost exclusively the orange paste. I roll a ball of it just big enough to cover the hook. This will float the hook and bait off the bottom out of the weeds. I leave just a bit of slack in the line and as soon as I see line movement hit'em.
I can't tell ya'll how many times i have been hauling them out while no one around me is getting bites fishing other methods. I have had people cast their lines in my spot ( like all the fish are only there), had 'em start edging toward me and as I leave rush to fill that spot.
It's not the location. When you have thousands of trout in a small body of water they are everywhere.

I am a sport fisher, not an eater. What is the best set up to keep the trout from swallowing the bait and getting hooked deep in their gut? I have tried circle hooks with the barb pinched but they still are getting hooked deep.

Bigger hook or don't fish bait.

This is the first year in a long time that I have not chased trout but last year, I fished Murphy, Frisco and McKinney. I use four ultralight rods 2 at a time) using the following rigs:

1 super duper in various colors. Normally silver or gold, toss out, let it sink a couple of seconds and reel in slow. Goal is to keep it just off the bottom.

2. Two hook bottom rig. Tie bank sinker on bottom, then create a loop 12 and 24 above weight. Use a small salmon egg hook (smaller than a powerbait ball). Attach hook to each loop. I try different colors until I figure out whats biting bit my favorite colors are pink, chartreuse and rainbow. Buy fresh bait every year because they lose their scent. I keep green, orange and white because sometimes they only key on one. The hooks have to be light enough to have them float.

3. Carolina rig with 18 of leader between the weight and the hook with salmon egg hook. Again you want to keep your bait floating of the bottom.

I recommend an ultralight rod with 4 pound test and you need to be able to cast it far. Im many cases the school will be out deep and you have to cast out to them. You should be able to cast at least 30 yards. If you are not getting bites move and move closer to the people that are because that is where the school is.

I have seven cases where a big bass eats a trout so be prepared.

Here is a quick tie of one of the three suggested fishing flies we like to have at the ready in our fly box when fishing for trout. Mixed up the video this time by adding background info, the recipe for the pattern, suggestions for fishing the GRHEN, along with the video of us tying one. This variant uses a bead head and pheasant tail instead of hares ear guard hairs for the the tail of the fishing fly. Do give it a try... possibly at one of the three ponds in Collin County this weekend!

How long have y'all seen that they typically last? Just realized they stocked one near me that they don't typically stock but it was 10 days ago

Went out to McKinney Lake this morning. Got there at daylight and started fishing power baits. They hit lightly but mostly not at all. Hour later the trout finally woke up and people started getting bites. Still nothing on power baits. Switched one rod to a small gold spoon and tore 'em up! Limited in less than 30 minutes. Caught them from 6 inches to 12 inches. Most were 8-9 inches and fat.
Go get some!

Great news! Really nice day, too! Made it to Murphy yesterday; trout were biting!
