I had an Eton radio (crank and battery) for weather on my boat. A millennial asked me what it was. Made me feel like an old.

The frequency range for CB Channels are Low Band 26.9650 MHz to 27.4050 MHz. UHF Channels are 470 - 806 MHz. Most radios cant do both. What are you going to be using it for?

Yeah, you wont do CB (27 MHz) and UHF (450 Mhz) in the same radio. I dont think youll do CB efficiently with a handheld either. A quarter wavelength at CB freq is 102. That sets up the antenna length. UHF antenna length is about 4, so that works in a handheld. The internal components are also specific to freq, so a perfect UHF receiver simply could not be convinced to receive CB freqs.

Thinking back through my RF career, I remember one piece of test equipment that could do a freq spread of 0 MHz to daylight freqs. It was the IFR FM/AM 2000 S (I think). It was a signal generator/receiver spectrum analyzer. Not a radio as it had no transmitter. It weighed 40#, filled a test bench and cost 40 grand. We had two of them.

You could get one of those, they are portable, and receive any freq you desired but you couldnt talk back, only receive.

If you just want weather, you can do that with your smartphone.

Eton. I used this one when the Tornado hit Rowlett 500 ft. from our house 3 years ago. It worked great, can get the weather channel and local. Here is the website https://etoncorp.com/ Even has a flashlight on one end. No batteries. Hand crank.

For bad weather go get a good scanner and get to know some local HAMS to get the frequencies, been doing that for almost 30 years. I used to do some storm chasing with s couple Dallas area HAMS.
To actually use to talk to anyone other than CB you will need a license. There are some pretty good hand held HAM units out there.

The Natl Weather Service offers free classes across North Texas each Spring where you can learn a lot and meet similar minded people. Info should be on the NWS Fort Worth office web site.

Weather radio is 160 MHz band. Starts at 162.400, ends at 162.550 I think. Transmits on several channels at 25 KHz intervals. This is a very good freq band for wide coverage. Youll get 25 miles omni easy from each low power site. Odds are you will receive one or more channels crystal clear. Its extremely annoying to monitor these channels so weather radios are squelched until the alert tone is transmitted and you get to hear the following announcements. Weather radios are cheap.
