I've had mine for a few years. It has made my fishing trips much more manageable and enjoyable. It works in water that is about 6 feet deep or less. I do not see a 'down side' to having one.
You might want to think through how you will mount it to your boat.

I've had one on my Hobie PA12 for about 2.5 years. As stanh said it's good to about 6 feet. I've used it to back up to a lay down and lower the spike just low enough to hang on to the lay down. Then it's just a little quicker to raise it and move on.
It is really helpful when you want to fish a spot for a few minutes (or longer) but don't want to fish it long enough to use your anchor. Mine is mounted on the back of my kayak with the bracket made for the Hobie Pro Anglers.

I think that they are worthless and I will give you $200 to take it off your hands In reality I want one in the worst way. Hate that I'm not finding a deal on one. It's a crazy strong hold on list price. If anyone knows somewhere that I can get a deal, would love to know. A pm would be grand. The new boat is suppose to arrive in a couple of weeks and I already have the second half of the equation (Anchor Wizard) for the bow, but NEED a PowerPole for the stearn. While you are at it add an Anchor trolley for the widest range of available options. Check out this video:

For me, I do not consistently fish in 6' of water and when I do its ofter under trees (making an 8' pole a pain in the rear). If I'm in shallow water, I can almost always find something to clamp onto. So, this little guy and 15' of 550 cord is all I need most of the time ( https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0000AZ9UR/ref=oh_aui_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&psc=1)

It's all personal choice, but kayaks are becoming more and more, small one man versions of bass boats, that in most cases a fully rigged kayak with all the bells and whistles will weigh in at over 200+ pounds, and you will need a trailer to haul it around, and not to mention the cost. Other than being able to fish a kayak tournament, it may get to the point where a person has to ask, "what's the point?"
Just one more cast!

I tend to agree with Jimbo. Granted, I have a Hobie PA14 which is 175 fully loaded.... However, I can transport with a pick up and Boondedox and I do my best to keep it simple.
I sold a Skeeter because I tired of the maintenence, storage and overall hassle of boat ownership. There are times that I miss running 60mph on "glass" water at sunset or running to the other end of the lake to find the fish. However, those times are few and far between and I mostly enjoy keeping it simple in my kayak. I also enjoy the opportunity to fish small water again.
None of this makes tricking out a kayak "wrong"... I simply feel that there is also value to keeping it simple.
As Jimbo said, it's a personal choice that is largely tied to the type of fishing that you do.
