I had to do something to control my diabetes. Insulin was the next step. So I am working on going Keto. I cut out as many carbs as I can find. The blood sugar came down immediately (good) and I have lost about 12# in the three weeks that I have been doing this. If I can cut out the alcohol, the weight should just fly off. But it's a weird diet that I haven't quite figured out yet. About all I can eat is meat and no-carb veggies. Easier to say what I can't eat. No beans like pintos, etc. no products with flour in them. No corn, including corn meal. No potatoes or french fries. No rice or noodles. No beer. No carrots.
Really hard to go out to eat, especially Mexican food. No tortilla chips. On long trips I keep a can of mixed nuts and Slim Jims in the truck. maybe some cheese sticks.
i can eat meat, nuts, green salads, green beans, cucumbers, tomatoes, cabbage, avocados, cheese, etc. I hit up the frozen food aisle at Kroger pretty hard. Frozen stir fry veggies (watch for carrots and corn), broccoli, can't handle kale yet, I'm burned out on cauliflower.
Don't know if I can do this forever.
I'm glad there are wine drinkers in this world ..... it saves more beer for the rest of us. Hopper

Started it on the 8th of Jan. down 16lbs. There is a Dr. on youtube named ken berry that really explains all of it in short topics. He is good and isn't trying to sell you anything. But from my research there are a ton of documented patients with type 1 diabetes that are able to drop their insulin per their doctors.

I'm on a basic calorie deficit for weight loss combined with light workouts that are good for health and metabolism. Lost 8.2bs in 11 days (I am really overweight so weight loss is more rapid at first). The truth is simple, eat less then you burn and you will lose weight. Identify why you are overweight and deal with it. Change your eating habits and it becomes a life style change not a gimmicky diet. I have lost 80lbs and gained it back, mainly because the gimmicky diet I was on was to hard to realistically maintain once I hit my goal. This time, I am changing the way I eat normal everyday foods. Very realistic, very easy, slow and steady. This time around I feel more confident in maintaining my weight once I hit goal.

I started on it about Halloween and am down 22 lbs. went backwards the weeks of Thanksgiving and Christmas so really you could say Ive lost 30.
It has some similarities with Atkins, but Atkins allows lots of high-carb veggies and sugars that are no nos on Keto. One of the key elements of the Keto diet is foods high in fat. Believe it or not, it is surprisingly difficult to find high fat meals. What high carb veggie is allowed on Atkins, I must have missed a chapter in the book. It's basically green veggies, squash, lettuce. I would kill for a potato at this point, or even a nasty carrot. Less than 20 carbs a day doesnt leave much room for anything . And Atkins is all about high fat.

It works, just be careful with BP and cholesterol numbers after a few weeks. Two guys I know have had issues with each after being on it a while

And Atkins is all about high fat. Maybe I missed the boat on what Atkins allows, but I thought stuff like beans, corn and carrots were okay. As a rule, most of the root vegetables are relatively high in carbs. I know what you mean on the potatoes. The key to the keto diet is that you maintain a mild state of ketosis. There is an enzyme that is produced by your liver, but only when you are starved of carbohydrates. Basically, your liver believes you are starving and produces this enzyme (ketones) that is the trigger for your body to start burning stored fat for survival. The goal is to stay below 20 grams of carbs a day. What I have figured out is that if you knock yourself out of ketosis, then you are out and it takes a day or two to get yourself reset. Doesn't matter if you miss by a little or a lot. So the days I cheat, I cheat well. I go for not only the french fries, but also the mac n cheese and buttermilk pie. The scale levels out for the next 2 days, then resumes its slow drop. It has worked for me anyways. I also strongly believe that every individual person has to figure out the right way for themselves.

Just a suggestion to some of the things I'm reading.
Look for DrKenBerryMD on Youtube. Lots of great videos.
Here are 8 vegetables you can eat unlimited quantities of on Keto. This means eat till full.
1)Celery 2)Spinach 3)Broccoli 4)Avocado 5)Cauliflower 6)Cucumber 7)Cabbage 8)Asparagus
To add fat to your meal, it doesn't take much. An Avocado daily, a tablespoon or two of high quality mayo, shred some bulk cheese (avoid store shredded), and eat high fat meats like 80/20 hamburger, ribeye, etc. I enter my daily food into myfitnesspal and it's pretty easy in the diary section to keep my macros in check.
But I'm also learning what Mark Perry and many others have been saying in all of these posts.... You must build muscle. Increasing muscle one of the fastest ways to burn fat.
So that has lead me to researching compound exercises and how efficient they are for someone at my age (54). Now that my weight is down, the exercise increase is my next phase.

All the low carb diets today are subtle tweaks of Atkins. The veggie list above it pretty much Atkins.

Keto has been good to us. I've dropped from a 36" waist to 34 again and now maintaining it for several months. The warden is enjoying it too. Heck just tonight, we had wings, avocado, homemade almond flour.. fried okra for eats tonight which were excellent.
Some folks mouths, flat out runs their minds.
