I know its very low-something like 6% of capacity but there are some decnt fishing reports coming out of there.
Any info or impressions would be appreciated. I'm a black bass fisherman but the lake seems to have a decent pop of white bass and walleye as well. It's a 7-8 hr drive from where I live so I wouldn't want to make the drive if its your basic mudhole.

Yep, back in 1968. Grew up in El Paso and we’d go camping there. Pretty sure the lakes changed a bit since then.

Last tournament I fished there was about three years ago.. Best I remember not a single team caught a 2 day limit.... Big change from the days when BASS had it on there schedule. If it's that far from your home I bet you can do better..

If you want to catch Walleye and small mouth take a looks at Lake Conchas or Ute.

Thanks for posting that-- I had never seen it. I do remember the story about his second day partner and the LC pointer being the key to Dennis getting the win. I fished against Dennis for several years back when Sun Country was still a pro am. I'm pretty sure Dennis fished our tournament in May of 1998 on the Butte. I got beat by Johnny Parks who also fished the opens back then.

When I was stationed in Albuquerque 1985-'87, when I wasn't hunting or skiing, I was usually at "The Butte," fishing for Largemouths from an 8' pond boat. I almost always camped and launched at the "catfish camp," on the west side of the upper-middle lake. Back then, the lake was usually quite high with whole forests of flooded brush. We caught a lot of bass up to 8 pounds either by making short casts or by vertical jigging a T-rigged worm or jig and pork eel in less than 3 feet of "thorny water." After I retired from the USAF and moved back to Texas, I went back to fish it for a few days, and the water level was so low that most of where I had caught fish was nothing but dry, thorny brush. I drove back home without ever launching.
