It's literally a place where the contours narrow down like a "funnel".

It can be a natural occurrence or manmade

An example, you have a cove that is 3 miles deep and 3/4 of a mile wide, 2 miles in the cove there is a manmade bridge that only has an opening that is 200' wide. That opening would be considered a funnel point to the back of the cove.

It can also be a drain that's narrowed to pinch points.

That's a bass highway:)

Thanks to the folks that chose to be helpful.... I get it now. I was confused by the use of funnel, which I took to be a narrowing, receding, low spot, and a point, which I took to be a narrowing receding high place. The two words together thru me.

All of the physical aspects noted and I think correctly so.

I'd only add that a funnel in nature accelerates things passing through them. So, water is accelerated as it passes between two boulders, for example, and most of us have seen those kayak events where a dude navigates between two boulders and literally squirts through at a rapid speed until the water opens back up.

The Bernoulli Effect.

Or, if you have ever been to downtown New Orleans, you'll note that the streets are very narrow by design. It increases the speed of wind, air, passing between the buildings. You live in a hot, humid climate, a bit of breeze is a big deal.

Hmm? Regarding fishing, just a guess that various sorts of funnels are great hang outs for fish. First, you have the obstructions themselves to hide back in the shadows and await a little floating meal. Or, if it is an open water funnel, a narrowing on the lake bottom or a narrowing of the walls on a river that accelerates the current a bit? Fish likely hang out nearby, might use them like an airport moving walkway.

When the bass are using the highways, what depth do then run them at or does it vary? Just seeing if they follow a certain depth or bottom

It varies, they like to hang out at off ramps, toll booths and overpasses .... I've even seen them at rest areas.

Not sure why you want to do it that way unless you're just fishing for fun (not in a tournament). This would put most people at a huge disadvantage. If you don't want to use the technology available to you, then good luck. There's a few people that are just fish whisperers but not you're average guy

Bass use the the same path daily. It is our job to intercept them on the way to feed and spawn. We all do that at different depths that we are comfortable fish. I use those at 3 levels.
- First light top water bite or search baits around the heaviest cover found. This area must still be adjacent to the best and most irregular contours out in deeper water giving the fish that route to the shallows.
- Mid-Range depth from 5 ft. out to 15 ft.. This is usually where the Funnel Points come into play. This is a good spot to make that interception when they are coming in and going back.
- Deep Water from 15 ft. to 30 ft.. This is where most of the Big Bass live. They are not going to travel a great distance for feeding. They tend to work off a time table which you have to figure out. The distance they go looking depends on the food supply. Once they feed-up they return to their comfort zone. This is why I keep the boat in 20 ft. of water to intercept the larger fish when they move to the base of the slopes and any irregular feature that they my use to ambush from along that contour line. It takes two to Tango. Man up front can reach the Mid- Range depths on protrusions and the sides of gouges by throwing long distance search baits. The man in the back of the boat can drag a Crig at this 20 ft. depth very close to where the Big Fish live and stage to feed. This is the position I like in the boat. I had rather drag all day long and catch one good fish than 10 smaller fish. It is also the best way I know to develop a pattern. If the man up front finds them somewhat shallower and on a particular search bait then we make the changes need.

Each person you work with holds some promise to your future success.
