Have been digging up research papers on the lifespan, reproductive cycles, etc on various long-lived fishes (mostly rockfish in the Pacific), to get some notion of the relative age of a given fish at a given size. It's kind of wild to consider that the fish on my line might be older than me.

But this one blew me away. The Greenland shark (a type of sleeper shark) apparently lives for several hundred years. The research has been misquoted to say that a 512 year old shark was discovered, but it seems quite possible that they could reach that age and more.

I'm trying to wrap my mind around the idea of a fish swimming around in the cold, dark depths that was alive when Columbus bumped into the new world!

Thanks for sharing! If I can't go out fishing I enjoy reading about about fish. smile Wish I gave subjects like marine biology more thought in high school and in college. laugh Speaking of which, does anyone have any book recommendations on marine or freshwater ecology/biology (I believe there is a specific name for freshwater but it's escaping me)? One of my favorites I picked up was Marine Biology - A Very Short Introduction by Philip Mladenov. Hard to find other reading material that aren't school text books, however.

pretty cool stuff. For what it's worth our instructional videos teach a lot about ecology and biology of speckled trout and redfish, enough so that many major competitors and youtubers have thought enough about them to copy the ideas, i guess that's the biggest form of flattery. Many many have watched them and loved them. Don't take my word for them tho, search for testimonials on them. Im finding that a lot of the scientific studies aren't well constructed nor long enough. We have to remember these are typically done by graduate students during a semester or at most a two to three year period. But most of the studies I've read are closer to 3 months.
