The pond at mid-June 2018, one year old, is showing off its beautiful water and well fed fish: catfish, bluegill, and bass.

Put my aerators and fountain on to run 10 PM to 10 AM. Pond temp has dropped from 85 top to bottom to only 80 top to bottom. It has been HOT around San Antonio!

What size were the fish when stocked a year ago?

Channel cats (4 to 5"), Coppernose bluegills (2 to 3"), gambusia and fathead minnows, all stocked May 17. Bass 3 to 5" July 17. Hybrid blue cats (4 to 5") and redear sunfish (3") October 17. Hand feed all every day...32% protein for the catfish and 42% fish protein for everything else. Some bass took to eating the feed, but they still hunt and bite lures.

That's amazing growth for one year.

So the bluegills would have a good start at spawning, I bought off the bass with six pounds of crawdads. Didn't see a bass (nine or ten bass) for three weeks...assumed they were scouring the bottom for the good stuff! But now, they seem to be real picky about grabbing a small bluegill.

That feed...I'm using Optimal 42% fish protein. 10 pounds of minnows, minus the water, one pound of fish meal. High protein feed, pick it off right in front of you, no chase required. It doesn't seem to affect their veracity at grabbing a handy morsel of lure. Likewise the catfish, they eat feed like pigs, but I've caught them on a jig head, a plastic worm morsel, and undeniably a piece of wiener. Although the Channels are very big, the new hybrid blue cats hit lures like a bass. Bam, you're on and the fight continues until you get him out of the water.

Nice bass this morning on a large buzzing lighting lure. Bass about 17 inches. A 25 inch ten pound channel cat and a mess of bluegill, the largest at 9 inches and ten ounces.
