Yes, with a deep-water submersible equipped with sidescan while grid searching an area based on its reported route, spotting by another US ship approximately an hour before sinking, rescued survivor locations, and seasonal winds and tides...

The show that was on last night did have survivors who spoke of their experience and many still have survivors guilt as in, "Why did they all die, but I lived?" The most disturbing to me was the survivors who became food for sharks. Wow! That would give you nightmares the rest of your life.

The biggest problem of why it took so long for them to send rescuers is no one knew the Indianapolis was in the area and was sunk. It was chance that a recon plane thought he saw a bunch of coconuts in the water and when he went back and took a low pass, all these coconuts had arms raised up out of the water waving him down. Wow! The Navy did not know the Indianapolis was even missing because some clerk did not do his job right.

Even if you stay up to watch it, it is worth it.

KERA Channel 13 is showing it at 10:30 pm on January 11th.

If you have donated to KERA and have their passport account, you could probably watch it online.

I may have seen this before but just in case I'm recording it. Everytime I hear about the Indianapolis I think of the scene in Jaws when Quint was describing the horror.

I am a Senager. (Senior teenager) I have everything that I wanted as a teenager, only 50 years later. I get an allowance every month. I have PU truck and a bass boat, I am blessed.

Horrible way to die, eaten alive. Can't even imagine.

My dad was on the Indianapolis, He never talked of it and died when I was 16 in 1976.

All I ever heard about it was from my uncle (his brother). Had a tattoo that said god bless the men of the Indianapolis.

Just watched this show. The interviews with those survivors were absolutely haunting. Very well done show.

Agreed. I watched it too and was one of the best Doc's I've seen. Searching for the ship wasn't near as interesting as the interviews with the survivors. The horror of living through that is unbelievable. In no way could I see them blaming the Captain for being torpedoed. Who ever was responsible for them not having an escort should have been court martialed.

For sure.

I was shocked to learn about the hate mail that the Capt. received over the years... annual Christmas cards blaming him for the death of loved ones, etc.
