Hi Guys! Hope everyone had a great Christmas. My wife and I spent the holidays in San Pedro, Belize. Spent nine days lying around on the beach working on our holiday tans. I did break away for a couple of days of Bone fishing though.



Went out with Carlos from Go Fish Belize. The weather was touch and go. Some periods of sun breaking through the mostly cloudy skies with some light showers flirting close by. The first day the fish cooperated, tailing and cruising high in the water column, making them easy to see. The second day was very windy but it didn't really matter because we didn't find many fish anyway, and the ones we found weren't very interested in eating anyway.



The first day we ran out to the Savanah Flats and poled along the edges of the drop offs and the shorelines of a few small islands.





I tied on a shrimp fly and marveled at how the water is so clear it doesn't look deep enough to float boat. Heck, it doesn't even look like there is any water under the boat at all.



It didn't take Carlos long to get me in position in front of a school of fish, happily puffing mud with there tails catching the sunlight like mirrors. I made a cast short of the school and waited. Once they were close enough a few short strips and the lead fish was on it.



Carlos poled us up next to and island that I meant to ask him the name of but forgot to once I noticed all the tails, waiving in the air close to the bank. This time the water really was too shallow to float the boat so I got out and waded after them. I got lucky. I made a cast to the left of a school, not seeing a fish that was farther off to the left. I didn't notice him until he was on top of the fly, tailing excitedly. I was glad I hadn't lined him and spooked everything.





Back in the boat, we moved on to the mainland coast line and found a few more fish. I ended up getting five in the boat.





Near the end of the day I got a shot at a big, and I mean BIG, Permit. But I flubbed the cast and he may still be heading for Cuba with a big wake and trails of mud boils following behind.
With that we headed in where I met my wife at the local bar for adult drinks and pizza.



Afterwards, we snuggled up in a hammock on the beach, watching the sun set and enjoying the eighty degree weather, knowing we would have to go back to North Texas and the freezing rain coming soon. But for now...

Was there the first week of November, and my trip report is very similar to yours. Sun plagued the DIY fishing I tried to do as well as my three different trips with a guide (decent sun maybe 30-40% of each day, good sight fishing then but then back to casting into flashing schools), and blew a shot at three big tailing permit. Had shots at six or seven schools of small permit, but they were rolling 5mph and didnt seem in the mood to eat. I went north every day vs going south to Savannah about only difference. Enjoyed your pics, brought back good memories.

Did you have any luck on your DIY trips? i talked to two guys that were walking down the road to Secret Beach carrying fly rods. They said they weren't catching anything. I saw another guy walking along the shoreline just North of the bridge, staring out into the water. I was on the other side of the bridge so i didn't get to talk to him but i never saw him make a cast. I have head there are some good, wadeable flats on the North end of the island but i haven't been up there.

You have to go WAY north as far as DIY that you get to via golf cart and then foot, maybe Secret Beach area would be another option that is closer than that flat.

I had a guy drop me via boat to the flat that is just north of Cayo Espanto and fished both sides of that finger and into a couple of mangrove lined coves and caught three smallish bones, water was stained and I had trouble seeing them until they were in tight. I did that same DIY deal for about 5 hours 3 years ago (but in early May) and had a blue bird day with clean water and caught 8 or 9, with two that pushed four pounds (and I lost a couple goofing around videoing), was a borderline epic morning.
