I have a 2001 Skeeter SL210 with a 200hp Yamaha with manual steering. I was reading about the Sea Star hydraulic steering system, looks like a nice upgrade but is it worth the $1,000? I have only owned this one boat and don’t know how much better the hydraulic steering system will make the boat handle.

Any comments or advice are appreciated.

I've owned my current rig for just over a year and it had the worst torque steer issue I had ever come across. Anytime I was on plane it was a constant fight to keep the this thing going straight. I had adjusted the trim tab throughout its whole range with no relief.

Finally bit the bullet and bought the Baystar hydraulic steering helm. Took me about 5 hours from start to clean up to install it. Waited until the next morning to give it a shot on the water. HOLY MOLY! What a difference! I was skeptical that it would work anywhere near as well as it did. My steering went from a constant struggle to absolutely no feedback whatsoever. If I let go of the wheel now, it tracks exactly where I left the wheel. Had I done this before, I would have been tossed me over the side.

I'm guessing the worst part of this install should have been pulling the hoses, but it had a very short run of pre-angled conduit so that wound up being a breeze.

Using a back light I was able to exactly position template for the helm installation so that went flawlessly.

Bleeding the lines was rendered way simple by this YouTube video. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pix1t7ROQ6U

I would say if you have been fighting torque steer issues, hydraulic steering will absolutely be the best money you'll ever spend on your boat. [Linked Image]

Texcajun thanks so much for the information. I’m glad to know the product works as advertised. The boat tracks ok just is hard to steer especially at lower speeds. Does your boat steer easily (wheel turn with little effort) now compared to before?

Mine is night and day difference. Regardless of speed. When I say it was a struggle before, that's an understatement. It was horrible. I wouldn't let anyone else drive my boat because if you let go of the wheel for a second, she'd take a 90 degree turn. For a 16' boat with 90 horses on the back, she'dve swapped ends in a heartbeat. Now? she doesn't budge from her track if I let go of the steering wheel. I can tell it takes slightly more effort to turn to the left, but that's easy to deal with. Even if I let go of the wheel in a left turn, she will not pull back to the right. Best fricken money I have ever spent!

And I was able to get away with the Baystar system since I am below 150. You'll definitely need to go the Seastar route. You will not be disappointed!

It sounds like it’s what I need. Thanks again for the testimonial! Nice to hear from someone who actually installed and used the product.

Of all the previous boats I’ve owned when I bought my current boat new in 2001 I had the Hydraulic Steering added and will say to this day it was the best decision I have ever made and added. I will never go back.

It is unbelievably safer, easier to drive your boat, looks better, just everything. Worth every penny for the upgrade. This is probably our most common job.

With all of the positive comments I have decided to install a Sea Star steering system. I need a tilt system for my particular setup, there are two options; Sea Star Sport tilt and a Sea Star Classic tilt. What is the difference in these systems? I don’t know what one to order. Any help is appreciated.
