There used to be a system that I bought, I believe it was called the Bass Wizard. I made copies of the pages and filled them out all through the 90's on Fork and for all tournament lakes. I even drew pictures on my pages and made really detailed notes. I also kept tournament result pages out of magazines etc. and fishing articles and put them in the folder. I ran across it out in my garage a while back and flipped through it to relive some old memories. I then had an old tournament partner that showed me his really simple system of putting a dot on his fishing maps in the area where he had caught any fish in the 4 lb or better range. Now approximately 20 years later since I started doing that I have maps using that system and really feel like the patterns I have learned from those dots have helped although these days I just am not ate up with it like in the past. I just pretty much go fishing these days when I get the opportunity and hope for the best.

Thanks to all of you that provided feedback. You guys have reinforced what I was thinking, and I'm going to get mine started this week. Obviously the payback on this is being able to look back and learn from what I did right and wrong. I really need to get better at finding where the fish ARE instead of just where they AREN'T!

I dont keep an actual log per se but use my iPhone to document a lot of fish weve caught. Pictures of the fish and type in the weight and lure shown in most of the pictures. A date and time goes along with the picture and I just put them into a fish folder. Ive gone back to it many times and really helps.

If you are using Lowrance units, there is a note section on each waypoint that you can utilize to journal information per waypoint.

Kept a very detailed record for almost exactly one year
The best attribute of logging is that it keeps you focused and goal oriented You fish with more purpose and more attention
You do pick up on repeated patterns quickly It can be particularly helpful if you fish a rotation of 2-4 lakes or so
There are slippery slopes of becoming too mechanicalfishing the past/not fishing the moment; getting lost in the trees/ not seeing the forest Youd be overdoing it if you started recording line type/strength/spike it used or not/etc
Overall; it would be better to keep a simple log than not to keep one at all
