when did they start shutting the lake down for high winds? They have been doing this for the last couple years. Since reopening the lake for fishing after the long shutdown post 9/11 they have restricted boats from leaving the large cove that contains the boat ramps when the fog is heavy. No going past the no wake buoys until if/when the fog clears. Its a subjective call but they do not restrict acesss unless its pretty bad and they are quick to allow access when it begins clearing.. For the last couple years they have restricted access during high winds also. I do not know if this is this is a completely subjective call or if it pertains to a set wind MPH(ie: winds in excess of 25mph). I do know that they have proactively restricted access prior to the high winds/bad weather even arriving because the weatherman/radar shows a strong front with high winds arriving at a later time. They are not overly picky on these rules and only enforce them when the weather is bad. Technology has certainly increased with mapping and GPS since my early days of idling out on Monticello in zero visibility fog but Im pretty sure another boat running me over in the fog will hurt just as bad as it would have back then! If you could get people to be smart and simply idle in heavy fog to their fishing spots or not get stuck out somewhere dangerous due to high winds maybe their rules would not have been necessary but in the end its not a public owned lake its private and its their rules. Some people just have to protected from themselves(cant fix stupid). Biggest problem is people driving a long way only to find the lake closed or limited access only to the ramp cove for fishing. I live right around the corner so its a slight inconvenience and the lady tells you at the entrance shack before you pay and waste your money that they are presently holding boats in the cove until/if the fog lifts. For those that drove 2-3 hours to get here that IF the fog lifts is huge!

High wind deal started after a small boat of Talapia Netters capsized on a high wind day and they weren't located until late that night. As I recall search and rescue had to be called in.

Correct. I forgot to mention that specific event. Ive been a Somervell County(Glen Rose) FD volunteer and they were involved in the search also. 800 tilapia in basically a row boat and high winds.....what could go wrong? Like I said above: you cant fix stupid!

Guessing they're of the same variety as the ones that frequented fairfield before the big tilapia freeze this year

The guys in the jon boat did cause the supervisor at the park to hold people in several times during high winds. Discussions were had and I do not think he has held anyone in this year for fog or wind for very long. The hope is people will stay off of pad when visibility is low. There is a rule for the wind. Sustained readings of 25 mph or greater they are supposed to call everyone in. Problem is you have to travel in it to get back. There are enough coves on the northern shore you can fish and stay out of the bigger waves. The guys in the jon boat tried to come across from the peninsula straight in to a north wind during a cold front. They had waves coming over the bow and they were not dressed for the temperature drop. They turned around and beached it and called for help.

I remember this , this is when they started getting strict with the wind. I think the guys had made it to the island and camped out until they were found.

Squaw sucks compared to what it used to be Not so much...still a very fun lake to fish, even though you're not catching the 5lb+ fish anymore. Thank all of the tournaments out there in the last 5 years for that. They killed Mrs. Big. But that's alright, too. That's what lakes do. Maybe in 10 years it'll get good again, prolly will have to close, though. It's crazy how these lakes cycle. I've seen many a lake do the same thing....
