For those of you still fishing cold water lakes....I always do a few different things in the winter time to change up some of the action on my baits, I've listed a few below...what are some of your bait mods or "tweeks" you like to do when the coldest parts of winter set in?
I like to add an extra skirt to my jigs to bulk them up a little
Use jig trailers with less action, instead of the big action like a paca chunk or something like that I use trailers with little to no action like the LFT Pig Claw. They also help to bulk up the jig.
A little lighter line on my rigs, 20-25 lb line is just awful in 30-40 degree air temps.. I opt for 17 lb on the jig rod, 15 lb on the chatterbait, 10 lb on the jerkbait, and 10-12 lb on the trap/crankin rods.
Other than my Bandit 200 and 300's I also like to throw suspending cranks. You cant do the line trick and pop the suspenders off cover, but they can help entice more bites when the fish really dont wanna chase.
Last... jerkbaits jerkbaits and jerkbaits. Suspenders, stoppers, deep ones, shallow ones.. by far my favorite bait this time of year. Always make sure I have a good feathered hook on the back, sometimes thats the difference in getting bite or not. I cant tell you how many times I've had quality fish on the jerkbait with only the rear feathered hook pinned in the top lip.
Lets hear some of yours!

I do not change much at all just for winter. I do the basic things that I do year round. Maybe change out hooks or such but rarely do anything different for cold water. I probably focus more on slowing down and fishing more thoroughly than anything. I tend to run around less. Might explain why I suck at fishing.....

I start throwing balsa crankbaits more, lots of Rapalas and old school Bagleys.

4-8 pound test on most rods except cranking rods, those get 10 and maybe 12 on one rod

I use the suspend strips on my senko hooks. One strip if fishing rocks. Two for fishing tree branches under water with trees sticking above the water. Spend Al ot of time in 4 to 20 feet. Fish a lot of jerk type baits. And of course my old red rattle trap. I like the old Bill Lewis rattle traps as i have hundreds of them and cant make myself buy a 12.00 dollar rattle trap. I also read somewhere that several of the pros still use them . After adding better hooks. Also a lighter Carolina rig line, 12 is usually as light as i go on the C rig line. with lighter weight 5/8th ounce. And big lizard baits. Uncle Ed where my favorites but i have found them in years.
