We bought it earlier this week. Its her Christmas gift. I got her other stuff, but she wanted a stove. The one we have is a slip in. Its old and the oven doesnt cook evenly. Its 29.75 inches wide. The cabinets are custom made and it fits perfectly. The new one is 29.875 inches wide. It isnt going to fit. I have been looking at band sanders since we bought it, but Im not sure I can remove enough wood to get the new one in. I spoke to my brother today, he asked about the size of the breaker. I never thought about that. I knew I had to install a new outlet because the old stove is hard wired in, the breaker isnt big enough, I bet the wiring isnt sized right either. Im kind of freaking out right now. This stove isnt going to fit and if it does, the breaker is going to trip if she turns on too many burners. I might burn down the kitchen in the next few days to hide the issue. The stove isnt coming in until after Christmas. She loves the new stove. It has induction burners and little fans in the oven. I cant bear to tell her it isnt going to happen. Now what? And yes, I bought some ear rings today, but she cant cook on them.

With the ear rings she will look good being mad. You might not want to say that to her right away.

Similar thing happened when we bought my mom a new stove. Have fun. By the way, it's not fun. Hire someone. Or just plan on cussing a lot.

I bet you can find one that fits, and has all the bells and whistles that one has. Have you tried Nebraska Furniture Mart? I hear they have everything, and are great to work with.

Dig out the pocket book .... call a carpenter AND an electrician! (of course, that is only 1/8" and should be easy to squeeze in)

I can assure you it will be cheaper in the long run than not getting her what she expects.

I still have to cut the cabinets out to make the new one kind of sit there, the new stove is a stand alone unit, the one we have is a slide in. Im going to tear up the cabinets before I can know how much I have to tear up to try and out the new one in. I cant sleep at nights thinking of ways this will go wrong. I have a week.

I had something very similar. Stove top on base cabinet. I removed the built in and replaced with two small base units that are a drawer size wide with the oven in between. Ran a new circuit and installed an outlet. 6 AWG wire is some thick stuff. Installed a new breaker in the box.

You could burn a lot of food with that many burners.

Didn't mean to upset ya.
It was a 'Whew moment', I'd always thought I was the only one who had a simple, straightforward looking project turn into a real headscratcher.

In similar situations, I've had to put a line, or strip of tape to keep a straight edge to keep from wandering off and getting a unwanted taper.

Before you totally screw up the kitchen, just go buy her a new house that will accommodate the new stove.

Another option - Just hire me and Ratz. We could knock that kitchen out in 2-3 weeks and you'd still need the new house.

Went through almost exactly the same situation about 7 years ago
Had to change the size of the housing and run all new wiring to the garage and install a new, separate breaker box for the new oven

Oh, yeahhire someone or two peopleits a big job

Even if you find one that fits, you will most likely have to do new wiring and install a new breaker box

Finding one that fits in the existing space would save you about 30% of the work on the job

Running the electrical to the garage is a beating

We're only talking about .0625" per side too tight correct? OK now get a belt sander and grind off a .09375" (+.250" /-0) taper on the front edge of the offending cabinets so you'll have a little clearance at the front.

Next you're going to need some 2x4's to build yourself a tapered chute that will guide the stove into the hole.
Get you some of that PAM cooking spray and spray down the whole sides front to back of the cabinets where the stove will go and also the sides of the stove..

You and all the kids and the stove get on the opposite side of the kitchen and shove that stove with a good running start into that hole. She'll go at least part way in.
Take the 2 x 4 chute apart and use some of the boards and a sledge hammer to gently tap the stove on back into place.

Wait, what about the electric cord? Not to worry. Have that plug tied up on top to where you can get to it.
Go down to the camper supply place and get one of those big honking 50 amp RV extension cords. You might have to cut the plugs off and just wire it up with wire nuts and electrical tape but that's OK. Run that cord back to the breaker box, cut the plug off and wire it into your new 50 amp breaker you'll put in.

Problem solved. Wife will be so happy to have her new stove running she won't hardly even complain much about the extension cord running across the kitchen.
If you're skilful with duct tape you can secure it nice and straight under the upper cabinets where it will be mostly out of sight. Trust me, this will work.

Recently purchased a cooktop and the specs said it was about 0.1 inch larger than the cut out, but it slipped right in without a problem. Yours may work.

I think WD-40 outta do it, buy a couple of the economy size cans and use one for each side and dont forget to spray the floor too! Should slide in nice and easy, no cutting or sanding required.

Good luck Mud. My wife wanted a new oven just before Thanksgiving. Ended up:
Bosch oven $2,500 (had to move outlet)
Bosch microwave $900 (has to add outlet)
Bosch dishwasher $1,200
New cabinets around oven $250
New tile backsplash (entire kitchen) $250

I did it all in 3 days and 13 Home Depot trips. Now put on your big girl pants and git r dun!

I already did the microwave, complete with adding new new outlet, did the fridge already as well as the dishwasher. Need to get this stove done, and finally the counter tops will be last.

My Dad straight up took a sawzall to their cabinets. I walked in and asked what he was doing. He said, Custom cabinetry.

Im guessing you dont have gas as an option?

What kind of counter top do you have? That might be an issue but you can probably get a bit on a saw that will cut it.

I have an old Rockwell router that I used for trimming siding. You can easily find a bit that will take off 1/16 of an inch at a time. I don't think you need a couple 1/16th's taken off.
We used to use the same type router, although it was pneumatic and it trimmed and put a round edge on laminates.

A little messy but you can just vacuum up the sawdust.

Can't help on the wire size or breaker but since its run on an interior wall, if the electrician can get to it I would not think it would be too complicated.

The stove was due for delivery yesterday. They never showed. I finally got a call from Lowes and they said it got damaged during shipping. Its going to be another month before the replacement gets here. We logged on to just cancel the order and saw where they had placed the wrong one on order anyway. Maybe it wasnt meant to be?

I would call and beach. At least get some discount over it. No reason you should have to wait that long because of their screw up. If they won't discount than I would cancel order and take business elsewhere.

That happened to us at Homey depot last year. I canceled and went looking. Found Texas appliance in south ft worth. They have other stores and the price matched hd. Took it home, installed it myself and was done with that chit and went fishing. Sometimes we have to take charge and tell the wife and those dummies they try to do business with to just sit back and watch a pro get this done. Take control mud.

It arrived! Finally we have a new stove! I have been really dreading this day. Tomorrow is D-day. After looking at it for a few months, I dont think its going to be an issue. My concerns are as follows:

1 - the supply feed is just three wires. Black, white and a ground. Im not going to run new line. Its going to be a three prong receptacle which isnt up to code. Im sure there are plenty of those out there so Im not that concerned.

2- the existing cut out still measures out about an 1/8 to slim for the new one to fit. I think I can sand that much down and make it fit.

3- I have to wire in a new outlet since the one we have is hard wired in. Shouldnt be a huge issue.

4- still have to knock out the kick plate and mount the original is sitting on.

5- mostly, I just dont want to do this.

Add some more wires. That should code it up.

You have 2 hots and a ground. I think You can make that work and just make the control stuff for 120, light, etc, work just fine by tieing your fourth wire neutral into that ground. It should work fine but wont be current code which would only be an issue at selling or in case of a fire investigation. Personally that is how I would do it. I wonder if you could leave the 3 conductor romex in place and just snake a separate neutral from the neutral bar in panel to the new plug? Technically it should work but dont know if even that meets current code. I would just stick with whats already wired and make it work. All neutrals are bonded to ground in the panel so I cant imagine why it wouldnt function ok. They did it that way for years before the new 4 wire business came along. Im not an electrician though.

Youre not gonna have a fire. Making the hole bigger is your biggest problem. Youve got two hots180 degrees out and a neutral. Thats 220 all day long. Your stove probably has black, red, white, bare copper. Black and red go to your black and white. Bare and white go to your ground.

Remember

Theres old electricians and theres bold electricians. But there aint no old, bold electricians.

Im confused on the plug.

Here is he wire coming out of the wall.

[Linked Image]

Here is the plug
[Linked Image]

The instruction on the plug say the white wire goes to the lower terminal. I thought hat is where the bare wire goes.

Also, the outlet I bought says not grounded. Is that right?

Observe the screws in the connector. Two gold, one silver. This applies to all a/c plugs and connectors. The gold screws are the hots and the silver is always neutral. Black and white to the gold screws, bare copper to the silver screw.

Make sure you understand the Spanish installation instructions. They may offer some workarounds and shortcuts.

Put crisco on the sides, then back off and get a running start, hit it dead center and that puppy will slide right in. Maybe.

It may not be too late, but have you checked if that opening is perfectly square? You may be able to grind one area more to square it up.

Keep up the good fight, people are counting on you.

I still have a section of the back splash to cut out, but for now, Im done. What a beating. We are burning off the new oven oil right now about to cook a frozen lasagna in it. Not going to lie, Im tired. The house is a wreck. Dust everywhere and it will probably keep settling for days. Just drank a Keystone but that will be the only. One of the kids has a dance tonight and I guess I should take him.

It sits out a bit further than I want it, but at least for now, that is how its going to stay.

If those handles in front would come off, I would have put it on the dolly and rammed it home. Couldnt figure out how to remove them.

Now that your almost done Mud, let's have a picture of that cabinet on the right. Looks like an island cabinet set from what I can see. Why didn't you just scoot that over the 1/8" - 1/4" over and cover any new gaps with a trim piece?

The Led lights on the new stove are brighter than the microwave you should take it back and get 1 that matches

A friend of mine had that stove. There's a recall and they ask anyone that has one to return it immediately.

Serious question for any, if that stove could go back an inch or two, would it bother you to leave it as is? Every single time I went in the kitchen it would bother me. Then it would start eating at me when I was driving/thinking, or reading posts on the OT...etc. Pretty soon it would be taking up so much mental space I would just have to go in there and set it back.

Anybody elses brain get ate up with it like that?

Yep, would bother me...more importantly, it would bother the wife! Our refrigerator sticks out like that and has bothered me for 8 years now!

I think you could mount it and give it a few dry humps. It should slide right in.

It is bugging me. By the time I got it to the pin tit was, I was beat. I just wanted it to be over. Getting the damn thing back out will be a beating now. Its wedged in there pretty good right now. I wish it had a tow hook on it. If I got it out, I think I could cut the last two inches off the back of the cabinet and get it the rest of the way in there. We getting new counter tops soon, so I might just leave it there for a while.

Well heres how the rest of the story usually goes for me. So it eats at me until I finally give in. I go and try to set it back. In the process of doing that, I tear the stove up...or something else. Then the whole shebang is either out of commission for a while OR the damage I cause bugs me more than the original inch of space ever would have bugged me in the first place.

My entire life-sphere is littered with stuff that is either inoperable or is rigged to be in place, yet held together with duct tape, mangled coat hangers, chewing gum and such...and its all eating away at my psyche. Meanwhile, I got S4B posts to deal with...

You have just described pretty much my entire life to a T.
Once in a blue moon, I will go out of chatacter and somehow make myself stop and say Good Enough.
One time I wasted about 7 pcs of 20 long steel hydraulic tubing trying to get a complicated bend to turn out like I wanted. 35 off the floor no one but me would have ever even noticed but I wanted that damn tubing to look perfectly aligned and matching the pattern. I was determined to make that happen and cost myself considerable time and $ but by gawd I was determined to get it done. Some form of insanity I think.

Mud, I am super proud of your fine work on that stove project. You done good!
