Hey Everyone, it is that time of year, when many of the fly fishing events are held in Texas. Here are some of the 2019 events that I know about, feel free to add anything I missed. The best news is they are not all on the same weekend this year!

Monday, Jan 7: “Dallas Fly Fishers meeting” – OK, I’m starting off with a personal one, but it is the first event on the calendar. smile I will be the speaker at the January DFF meeting and the topic will be “Casting Accuracy”. So, here’s an invitation to come join me at this meeting. Accuracy is a fun casting topic to discuss and a very useful skill on the water. The presentation starts at 7:00 pm at the Dallas Wyndum Hotel near the NW corner of 75 and 635 (behind the In and Out burger.)

Fri evening and Sat morning, Jan 25 – 26: “Red River Rendezvous” – The Red River Fly Fishers have hosted a fly tying get together every January for a dozen years or more. This is a fun, relaxed event on the shores of Lake Texoma. Bring your vise and tie some flies or just come out and learn some new patterns and techniques while sharing fishing stories. If the weather is nice, I’m sure someone will be outside casting too.

Saturday, Feb 16: TPW’s “Fly fish Texas” - This is one of oldest, large fly fishing events in Texas. It is a very family friendly event. So, bring the kids or grandkids with you. There are casting lessons, fly tying lessons and demos, speakers, and fishing. I like this event. It is held at the Texas Freshwater Fisheries Center in Athens, TX.

Friday to Sunday, Feb 22 – 24: TU’s “Trout Fest” – Another of the large Texas events. This one is held along the Guadalupe River near New Braunfels. This is a very popular event with a lot of activities available.

Saturday, March 9: TRWD’s “Flyfest” – This one is fairly new, but has quickly grown into one of the larger fly fishing events in Texas. It is held along the Trinity River in Fort Worth. Fly tying, casting, and fishing are all available.

Saturday and Sunday, March 23 & 24: “Texas Fly Fishing & Brew Festival” – In its third year, this is another of the state’s larger fly fishing events. It is different than the other events listed and I have enjoyed going to it. This one uses the format of a major fly fishing show that includes vendors, manufacturer’s representatives and booths, nationally known speakers and instructors, and casting ponds. There will be people at this event that we don’t normally see in Texas. My advice, attend as many of the presentations as possible. The presentations are free with admission. This one is held at the Plano Convention Center in Plano, TX.

Another event that happens in the March/April time frame is the fly fishing bass tournament on Lake Fork, but I haven’t heard the 2019 date.

Dates: Mar 6, 2019 – Mar 10, 2019, Houston Fishing show. There’s some fly fishing oriented vendors at that show every time I’ve been.

Can't wait for this since Pat Cohen is doing a demonstration in Houston. He's the Picasso of deer hair.
