After years of fishing tournaments, and getting both of my sons addicted to the sport, I have managed to convince my wife to fish a couples trail with me this year. I'm pretty sure that this will go well, but am I asking for trouble? I know that it has already cost me a chunk of money, and she hasn't even gotten started yet. I have always enjoyed the rare opportunities when I get to fish alone, so I wonder if this will bring those days to a screeching halt. Have any of you guys had good experiences getting your spouse into fishing tournaments?

Mine cannot muster enough energy to fish for more than 2-3 hours..... If we are at the ranch ponds its even less than that cause she catches 2-5 fish and gets her fix and then wants to leave.

Mine didn't like being out there for 8 hours and when she has to go, she needs a toilet .... will not go over the side of the boat or in the woods.

To this day cannot get my wife to go fishing with me. Got my daughter talked into fishing a couples trail with me and 1st tourney was 35 temps with rain and 20 plus on the wind. 2nd tourney was rain and 20 plus on the wind, 3rd tourney you guessed it Rain and lots of wind, and 4th tourney of the trail well I did that one alone HA HA. she hasn't joined me since. Good luck and pick a trail with good weather HA (Like that is an option).

Good Luck

My wife fishes with me now. For fun and in tournaments. I wouldn't have it any other way. I miss the days where me and Zach ran around Fork like the Duke Boys fishing tournaments. But guiding halted that for him. It gives you more time with your wife. Ive taught mine a lot on the water. And fortunately she has become a pretty dang good angler.
My wife is a little more competitive than most. All she wants to do is take peoples money! roflmao So that helps as well.

Mine fishes with me, but it is really difficult for us because we have 4 kids under 10. Finding childcare from 4-5 a.m. - 5-6 p.m. is more difficult then one might think.

I'm with Sinkey but his situation is a rare one. My wife has fished a few smaller tourneys with me and had a great time but I made the day about her having fun vs doing whatever I could to win $$. That is the advice I'd give you if you want it to work out the best.

I love fishing with my wife... unfortunately it just cant happen as much these days. We're talking about fishing a few couples tournaments this year, hoping to find one that doesn't have the "jackpotter" type rules that try to make couples fish the whole trail or pay multiple entry fee's to enter if you miss the first tournament.

Amen. Mine gets mad when I tell her to use a bucket.

The weather is always a consideration, if it's cold or raining she's miserable. I watch for open team tournaments or evening jackpots, and if the weather is going to be nice she gets a game face on that sometimes freaks me out.
And yes, Folgers coffee can in the bottom of the boat for #1. I always have hockey tickets in the boat, she can walk out in the woods for #2 or clinch really hard like a real fisherperson is supposed to.

Since you fish alone quite a bit when you get the wife with you, you will need to be more aware of boat position so you can keep her in a good location to fish. Get her to cast forward so you don't have to back up when she gets hung up and have to back track.

Potty time...Get her a travel cup that is made for that. You can find them at your local pharmacy. They also make a fold up rubber funnel that she can use to aid with the travel cup. She can wrap a towel or other clothing around her for privacy.
