Does anyone carry their kayak in a truck bed with a spray on bed liner?

If so, thoughts? Just got a new truck with no liner and I’m trying to decide what kind to install.

I’m concerned that a spray on type would be too rough and scratch the kayak.

I previously had a Rugged brand drop in liner that was easy on the kayak hull, but overall, I did not care for the quality or functionality of the liner.

I carry mine in the back of my F250 with the Line X bedliner and have no problems. The liner is the least of my worries though as I usually drag over rock in the shallow areas I fish. The bottom is going to scratch regardless of the liner IMO.

Most all modern truck beds are setup to slide a 2x4 across then you could throw a pool noodle over to protect the kayak from running on the 2x4 but not required...

There's nothing to worry about with a spray in bed liner. If you're concerned about scratching it you could lay down some scrap carpet.

My truck bed has the Rhino Liner and it's kind of rubbery so no scratching. Some of the do it yourself brush on liners are rough like sand paper though.

I have a buddy who lays a yoga mat under his kayak. It helps protect and it gives some cushion for it so it doesn’t move around when strapped in. His bed doesn’t have a liner though. Seems to work out great.

You're overthinking it. I have a pretty rough bedliner and it doesn't make a difference. But my boat has been down many a river with rough rock like the Devils. So my bedliner is probably just helping out smooth out some rough edges. Seriously though, it doesn't matter unless you plan on keeping it as new as it came out of the factory. Good luck with that!

No matter how hard you try unless you carry it from the truck to the water and never scrape it against anything it will stay pristine.
I bought mine used and I swear there wasn't a scratch or mark anywhere on the bottom, and I asked the guy if he ever used it, and he said he did, but he carried it and never let it touch the ground.
When I got it home I initiated it and it got scratched by me.
I'm careful not to gouge it out, but a few rock marks from the shoreline just add character.

My yak hasn't suffered any damage from the spray in liner. Actually, the yak has put some wear one the bed liner, mostly at the end of the tailgate. Rocks and concrete boat ramps are much harder on the yak.

Just get two fat pool noodles and set the kayak on those.

I've got a liner and no problem at all. If you could see my kayak and look past where I ran over some oyster beds, the rocks from the rivers I've hit, the stumps I've hit, the banks I've dropped it down and drug it up, you would see a perfectly smooth micro spot.

No bed liner here.

I have a few rubber car floor mats that I bought at Walmart and they stay back in my truck bed all the time. I pull one down to tip the bow of my kayaks on top of, then lift the kayak by its stern end and slide it into position.

Works great, no scrapes on truck or kayak.

Brad

The key is to secure your kayak so it doesn't move. No movement means no damage to the surfaces resting against each other. Also be sure not to over tighten because you can warp, crack, or break your kayak. Ratchet straps are a no no.

I didnt worry about the bedliner with my old riptide but I got a 2019 outback and couldn't make myself carry it all the miles I have to travel on that rough liner. I actually bought a rubber bed mat to go on top of my spray on.

It's going to get scratched no matter if you have a liner or not.
