I caught a few on cedar creek lake yesterday with eggs way back in the deep creek. Thought the same thing. Apparently they hold eggs for awhile.

I've cleaned a bunch with eggs but the egg sacks are not that large. Maybe where you are fishing the crappie will start the move in February and the spawn in early March. Where I fish the spawn goes from March into late, late April.

There are a lot of crappie that spawn in the Spring before I see any boats on the lake fishing for them.
When the weather is perfect to go fishing, most of the better sized Crappie are about done.

Happens every year. They will only get bigger as we get closer to the spring.

It takes a while for the eggs to develop. Had some small egg sacks showing up back in November just developing. Get ready for February of depends on temps, late January.

Most don't notice, but if you look close, you can see the development start as soon as the days start getting shorter in August, September.

Caught crappie on Lewisville with beginnings of egg sacks in early October, a lot of freshwater fish in TX have eggs in them for 5-6-7 months in total.
