I just got mine renewed in person about six months ago. Went online, made an appointment, showed up to the small Plano DPS office about 20 minutes early, checked in and watched the monitor with about 150 other people.
42 minutes later I was outta there with my new license, Easy-breezy! texas

Getting a drivers license renewal is not prima facia evidence that you have a car or drive. (Ive always wanted to use that in an OT post). No proof of insurance needed.

The mega centers used to be great as you could make an appointment and be out in 30 minutes or so. Now that is a beating. The one in Carrollton has lines with maybe a 100 people standing on line outside and those places are big with probably 50 clerks. The small area offices may be the ticket.

" No proof of insurance needed" Try that on a state trooper.

I forgot all about getting mine renewed until today, it expires tomorrow. Got on line, registered, paid, didn't see a confirmation number, checked email.. nothing. Thought I must have gotten scammed on fake website. Checked another site, called in and did it over the phone...had my doubts about that site too as they asked about $1 donation from I swear 10 different charities. I said no to all including donating my body parts. Check email again and find out the first one went through too. So I paid twice this year, I must be an old.

Proof of insurance not required to renew a DL in Texas. I renewed mine at the DPS in Lewisville recentlly. You can go to the DPS website and see exactly what's required to renew. Insurance ain't on the list.

I agree totally!
And dont take your social security card with you either. If they tell you your Social Security # is not in the system and due to a changing of the rules since you last renewed in person that you have to show them your card, just tell them to pound sand. Tell em you were born here in this country by gawd and to renew your damn license right now!!

but just in case that doesnt work and you wind up having to get a replacement SS card it would be a good idea to take your birth certificate or a passport when you go to the SS office to get a replacement card

DPS uses USCIS SaveSystem for non US Citizens

They require a SSN ,but there is also a form you can always use saying you don't want to give your SSN, due to personal or religious reasons

Yes, if it states that. I went in Oct at Lewisville DMV and waited almost 2.5hrs for the whole process. Quite the beating!

They test for color vision now
Horizontal and vertical yellow, red, green lights in different orders
Was worried about that part of the exam (the red is closer to an orange, really light green, and a muted/faded dark yellow)

When I had to renew in person/not via mail it was at the DPS not the DMV

Texas DPS is open on some days most people think they are closed

I remember renewing mine on Columbus Dayno line

Makes sense, since they are a state department and not federal.

All part of the Federal Real ID act.

"Secure driver's licenses and identification documents are a vital component of our national security framework. The REAL ID Act, passed by Congress in 2005, enacted the 9/11 Commissions recommendation that the Federal Government set standards for the issuance of sources of identification, such as driver's licenses. The Act established minimum security standards for license issuance and production and prohibits Federal agencies from accepting for certain purposes drivers licenses and identification cards from states not meeting the Acts minimum standards. The purposes covered by the Act are: accessing Federal facilities, entering nuclear power plants, and, no sooner than 2016, boarding federally regulated commercial aircraft."
