I wanted to get you guys thoughts on Evinrude motors. I'm sure like trucks everyone has their favorites; (Ford, Chevy, Dodge) but I wanted to know about the performance, service issues and anything about Evinrude motors. I'm looking for my first bass boat and I'm seeing a number of boats for sale with Evrinrude on the back. Should I steer clear of them or give them a chance?

Depends on the year? Are you talking about an ETEC engine and if so Gen1 or Gen2?

If its a FICHT, beware. Parts hard to find. Not a lot of shops that will work on them. Etecs not as bad. Personally, in that year modell range, I'd be looking at Merc as my top choice. But that's MY preference because of parts availability, shop/mechanic availability.
PS: I sent you a PM.

I was in a position similars to yours and ended up buying a rig with an 03 Ficht (the good ones) with 400+ hours. Buying any 15-20 year old motor is inherently risky - theyre all basically survivors. Do your homework on Fichts. I bought mine because it was manufactured after the issues (change of ownership) and its HO meaning its a 225 with a 250 EMM map. I also acquired a copy of the scanning software so I can maintain it to the best of my ability. Im extremely pleased...

Ficth issues were really in the 97-99 time frame, stay away from those. Bombardier bought OMC in 2000 but IIRC it took a couple years to really get them right. 2000 and up should be OK if pinned, and 2003 going forward you shouldn't have any issues/worries about Ficth powerhead issues - just normal 15 year old motor stuff.

To be honest, the biggest issue wasn't the fact that the motor's were having issues, it was the way OMC treated the customers. OMC basically stuck their heads in the sand and ignored the issue, left a lot of folks without boats for a long time. Burned a LOT of bridges. There are still people today who will never buy an Evinrude again. Similar to Trey's shenanigans at Kistler early on.

Thanks for the replies everyone. I'm new to boating and just trying to learn before making a purchase.
Any information you may have I would appreciate you for sharing.

I have a 96 Evinrude Vindicator and I would trade it for anything right now. It cranks every time with no issues. The VRO works great and it's never given me problems. I do all required maintenance on it, but it is a solid motor. I have it on my 96' Hydra Sport LS205 Dual Console... It's running around 68-73 MPH depending on gear, fuel, etc...

Evinrude dealers/tech's are in the minority. Make sure you have a good one in your area in case you need them.

Doesn't matter what the brand is. On a used motor, maintenance logs are king. That and a tech inspecting the motor.
