I was in a bass club for 5 years back in the eighties and went all over East Texas. I wish I could remember all of stories that went down including thefts, fights in hotel rooms adjacent to ours, keys that wouldn't work OR keys that did work that were not supposed to. These days I will not travel unless I've looked at some reviews on line but didn't have that luxury. We were on a September tournament once were I'm sure the temps were in the 90's. Had not gotten a room a head of time but were just staying one night in Texarkana to fish Wright Patman. Got with our bass club guys and followed them to the place they were all staying. A small clean looking place but it was booked. Not only that but the office was locked up with a sign saying " be back in ..........." We headed off not knowing where to look. Finally found a place that looked like it had been built in the 1950's and looked kind of like a nursing home as it was spread out and one story. It was dark by then and after going inside let me just say we were the only people of our race there as there were maybe 15 people hanging around in the lobby. We got our room and it was bareable.....we think. The drain on the tub would not drain and rusty water came back up in the tub. Could not do the shower. Nope no way. The room was barely cool maybe 80 or so. There was air coming out of the vent but not true A/C. Thermostat was cold/hot. We put the mattress on the floor to get a little bit cooler and be able to sleep. We had brought ALL of our tackle in the room. No way we'd leave it out. Had ice in our built in cooler in the boat with supplies for the next day. Around noon on tourney day we went for our drinks, bologna, cheese slices, mayo etc. The only thing in there was two waters! Everything else was gone. Lunch was a slice of bread and potato chips we had in another box they had missed.

Inn of Jefferson in Jefferson, TX. Definitely the nastiest I've ever stayed in, but it was a port in a storm when I needed it.

Been in some dives on Amarillo Blvd for an hour at a time. Doesn't mean they weren't bad times.

When Lake Fork first opened up, anything resembling 4 walls and a roof was being rented out as luxurious accommodations. Put as many bunk beds as they could cram in there and claim it would sleep 8. Hot water was a big plus back then!

+10 on this. Luckily I had taken my sleeping bag. Slept on top of the bed cover, because I wasn't about to open up the bed to see what was under the cover. Absolutely filthy and had a hole at the base of the floor where it looks like animals had been going in and out.

The other side of the coin is that I stayed in a shady Motel 6 on IH 35 because the had a couple of unguarded dumpsters.Over a couple of nights I filled a dumpster with the abandoned [censored] from a rent house. Probaly 10 pickup loads including about a ton if car parts until they caught on.

back in early 90's had a tourney on lake Jordan and stayed in a motel in Wetumpka,Al...believe it was called the Wetumpka Inn and was owned by an older indian couple that barely spoke englishwhen I checked in the woman was trying to tell me not do something and making these wiggling motions with her hands....she motioned me to come outside and follow her around back and she pointed to a fish cleaning sink and I think what she was trying to tell me was to not clean fish in my room....
it was typical dimly lit Indian owned motel room....40 watt light bulbs don't burn as much electricity or allow you to see dirt as well or how worn the furniture etc is...
next morning when I'm getting my stuff out of room,I notice the lamp beside bed is flickering on and off.. looked under the table and noticed the lamp didn't have a plug....somebody had just skinned the wires back and stuck them in the socket and scary part was there were black scorch marks up the wall above the plug.....I snatched the wires out but nobody was up in the motel office yet plus I figured they already knew about it and I would be wasting my time telling them about it...
when I got back home,I called the Wetumpka city hall and got ahold of a guy in the code inspection office and told him what I had seen and my concern was somebody could get burned up....he seemed appreciative of the call and promised to check situation out....

We stayed at the Flagship Hotel in Galveston about 20 years ago. It looked great from the road as it was built on a pier out over the Gulf. Unfortunately it was in its dying days., The place was lacking from zero maintenance for several years. It was clean, but just completely worn out. We did not get much sleep as our room was next to the elevator and there did not seem to be any insulation in the walls. The elevator was constantly in action the entire night. I just researched the hotel & it was demolished in 2008. There was a family in the room above us & the kids were fishing from their balcony. They were reeling fish in quite regularly.
Another time I went with my parents to Galveston when I was about 8 years old. My mother talked about the size of the roaches there until the day she died.
