The Donkey rig is used when mid-water to surface fishing and presents two, lively soft plastic lures.

Donkey Rig Components
2 x worm style wide gape offset hooks
2 x swivels
2 x shad style soft plastic lures
Fluorocarbon trace line

The Rig Assembly
1. Tie one swivel to approximately 24 inches of the fluorocarbon line and attach hook to free end.

2. Tie the second swivel to a shorter length of the fluorocarbon line, around 18 inches, and attach second hook to the free end.

3. Thread the mainline through the eye of the swivel on the shorter of the two snoods then tie off to the swivel on the longer snood. As an alternative to the main line a length of leader can be used with a swivel at the top allowing for quick change of rigs.

4. Thread the lures on to the individual hooks.

The longer hook can be weighted using a weighted worm hook or by attaching a split shot to the hook shank. The whole rig can be weighted by using a split shot above the fixed swivel.

I was having a tough day and I thought about the double fluke deal.

So I did the above set up but with two lake fork magic shads. I used a 3 inch on the front silver and black and a 5 inch green pumpkin behind. My thought was maybe they would chomp the 3 inch to keep the 5 inch from feasting. Or chomp the 5 inch thinking it was distracted. I weighted the 3 inch with the standard underbelly weighted twist lock hook and no weight on the 5.

I fish the lake fork magic shad a lot, I think I use it when many of you on here would be using a fluke. I fish them on 1/4 inch under belly weighted hook and drag the bottom.

I caught two fish in 3 casts with it and cut it off after because Both of those fish had the 5 inch hook already choked into their gullet and likely werent surviving.

Ive caught a lot of fish on the 5 inch and have never had one in the gullet until these two.

I dont know if I wasnt feeling the initial bite so they were getting to the gullet as they tried to consume it or if they just choked it that much faster because of the two bait set up.

I havent tried it again and after that it was back to very very slow bites.

Its a bit of a contraption to tie up.

I have used it on several occasions. It works for catching, but I have always caught more quality on a single fluke. I am not sure what it is about the rig but I have never been able to catch size with it.

It can really fire up schooling bass (bass competing for a food source). The biggest bass don't tend to school as often or camp out below the schoolers. I throw the donkey rig a lot post spawn and fall. There's been a couple of times when I've had a great day with it catching a few larger wolf pack bass.

But, a single fluke is much easier to fish around isolated brush/timber--where bigger bass can tend to dwell.

My absolute favorite way to fish a fluke....Catches them when nothing else will.

"Catches them" even if a single fluke doesn't work?
