"Of course. Im not saying that its nothing. Upper class, though? $120,000 can make for a very comfortable life, but its not like theyve got money to do whatever they want, either. "
Want is why some might think $120,00 is not enough. It's "wanting more" that has led to getting a better education or employment and leads to a more prosperous country. Anything beyond basic needs is fueled by wanting more so it's not a bad thing. Being grateful for what you have now isn't either.
BTW Income is not restricted to just salary and wages.

Prepare for the future-it will be here tomorrow. Personal Best Large Mouth Bass 9 lbs. 12 oz 5/13/19. Herb Stein, who famously reminded us that “if something can’t go on forever, it will stop.”

By that article we were upper class till be retired. Still middle class being retired so all is well. As for having a flushing toilet, I have been to places that had no running water or electricity. We are truly blessed in the good old USA. I am going to be 68 Saturday, as a kid we had no running water or indoor plumbing until I was 12. We were not the only ones in eastern Williamson county doing without that.

Depends on what one does with it. If the person owns a home with a half million dollar mortgage, two shiny new cars financed for 7 years, etc, then $120K really isn't all that much.
Of course. Im not saying that its nothing. Upper class, though? $120,000 can make for a very comfortable life, but its not like theyve got money to do whatever they want, either. 120k puts you in the 90-95th percentile of earners for 2017. Only 1 in 20 people make more than that. That seems to be on the upper end of the income spectrum to me. Upper class, to me, isnt about income (its about social status, which historically also includes the wealthy), but for this discussion theyre defining middle class by income level. I take what they mean as middle income, not class. I understand the numbers you laid out, and that theyre on the upper end of the income spectrum. I still dont think making $120,000 a year makes one wealthy or that it is a lot of money, regardless of where it lands you on the income spectrum. Yes, its a good yearly income and a family can absolutely live comfortably on it, but I think there is a misconception in this country about the income spectrum/how the middle and upper classes live.
