Hi all. I have a 2000 Yamaha 200hp OX66 that I believe blew a piston last weekend. I have not torn into it for a diagnosis yet. What is your opinion on rebuilding versus buying a new or rebuilt power head and bolting on. I have been told these are great motors and I really can’t justify buying a new motor for a 20 year old boat that is paid for. I live in Texarkana and would like some recommendations for shops to do a rebuild in my area but I’m having a hard time locating a shop near me.
Any leads on a good rebuild shop or a used replacement 200hp would be greatly appreciated. I work at our family owned machine shop so any block or cylinder work I could handle. I may just tackle this myself.

Nothing wrong with rebuilding with a blown cylinder as long as the bore will clean up. My friends, relatives and I all use East Texas Outboard Rebuild in Gun Barrel City.

East Texas Outboard Rebuild for me as well. Excellent work and a better warranty then a replacement powerhead will give you.

I just looked at their website. I am only finding information about a 2 year warranty that is 50/50 the second year. I will give these guys a call. What type of price range did it run you guys that chose to rebuild with them?

East Texas outboard is a well thought of shop.... shame about the warranty though....it used to be 2 years full and 2 years 50-50

I am rebuilding my Verado 250 right now. I’m so glad I did because a shop would have tried to sell me a power head. I had a head gasket leak that got water in the oil . Bearings and gaskets was $400 and I got a new crankshaft off of eBay for $150 . New powerhead would’ve been $10k.
If you have a two-stroke, a lot of those have aluminum blocks with steel sleeves. You can stick the block in the oven and heat to about 450 then pull the sleeve out and stick the new one in .
If you could get your hands on the overhaul Manuel so you would know tolerances and Trorq values you would be better off.
A couple of things I do is but every bolt in a labeled ziplock bag and take video/ pics to see how to route harnesses etc..
Being successful is achieving that which you set out to accomplish!
