Over the last year I've stopped throwing texas rigs almost entirely, and have made the fluke my go to lure. in this year I've made several discoveries pertaining to the art of the fluke. First the albino super fluke by Zoom is the most versatile fluke on the market. Second the Yamamoto D shad is the best fluke on the market. It seems as though it is just a little heavier than the normal super fluke, and is softer making it easier to set the hook in timid fish. Thirdly fluke fishing to me the best all around technique.

Must be hard to decide when “albino super fluke by Zoom is the most versatile” and “Yamamoto is the best fluke on the market”. Sure would be easier on me to replicate your success if the best lure was one lure! I like my shortcuts really narrowed down for me!

Fluke fishing can be excellent and I've had some great days on them. I know some guys who share your sentiment regarding it being their "go-to" tactic, and if that bite is on, they are on. If that bite is not...well...
I like to think of any technique or particular bait as one of many arrows in my quiver, and non of them are universal. On a calmer day around vegetation, or if fish are up shallow, and if I feel like I've found fish, a fluke might be on the shortlist of things I'm going to try and make them eat. But if I'm in search mode, if there are higher winds, if I think the fish are deeper than 8 feet, or if they're relating really tight to wood, among many other scenarios, a fluke just isn't what I would consider the most efficient bait for me. On those types of days, I might still be able to catch fish on a fluke, but if there's a better or more efficient way to do it, I'm going to try and figure that out.
Glad that you've found something that works consistently for you though.

The fluke is definitely bad [censored] and once you master it, its deadly. There are dozens of ways to fish a fluke and most fishermen will tell you that the way they fish it is the best but the versatility of this lure is only limited by your imagination. I know guys that will walk it weightless across the top of the water in and out of heavy cover and some others that will throw it weightless in 20ft of water and let it slowly swim to the bottom giving it a twitch every now and then. The key to success with the fluke is to never get stuck fishing it only one way.It is an amazing lure.

More bass fisherman have died fishing like this than by any other means. They cast it out, fall asleep, fall over the side, and reach the bottom faster than their fluke. At least they go doing what they love...

But have a partner who catches big fish that way.

My Bass Champs partner this year Rick is a really good Fluke fisherman. Funny how different anglers have supreme confidence in a bait and it really makes them good at that bait. He really had the feeling when fishing the bait and would get into areas and really catch fish after fish. It was a blast watching him and it was a big part of his success catching fish.

Try Carolina rigging it......deadly...
I remember Fishing Medina when I was young....”Gin clear” water makes it tempting not to fish a fluke all day and watch those bass come up and eat it.

I smiled when I saw this thread. My partner and I fished Squaw Creek sunday, we caught 13 fish, biggest was 4.57. Actually my partner caught 11, i caught 2. So in an effort to see what I could have done different, i started reading and watching videos on fishing a fluke. The most novel way I saw it rigged is with a round bend hook, and texas rigged. Before inserting the point end in he slipped a bell sinker on the hook, and left it slide back and forth. The angler claimed that the sinker would slide to the middle of the hook and cause the fluke to drop down in the water column, and it would hold a horizontal position.
Thought that was interesting.

Well I'm no pro, but some will tell you that I can fish a fluke pretty good and many different ways. I found it years ago you just have to be patient with this technique. A couple of years ago in a tournament with a hour or so left I boated 3 bass in a row to pull a second place finish. Color of choice watermelon red and my famous sweet potato fluke. I'm just saying.

Don't rule out a Senko type bait and a baby brush hog. Both of those are fantastic fish catchers.

Supposedly Lake Fork Tackel makes their own version of a fluke. Only downside is I’m going to have to order them online, because no one in SA wants to carry them.

Fish it Carolina with 1/2 oz to 3/4 oz (depends on wind) with a 30-36 inch leader, but don't drag it. Instead, fish it just like you would a fluke near the surface or a Jerkbait and HOLD ON!!
WARNING: Bites tend to be rather VIOLENT in nature.
Everything on your bass boat is broken......You just don't know it yet.

The Cabellas Outpost in Waco carries them. We have next to nothing: Bass Pro which only carries their brand, Dicks has about 10 things on the shelf and Academy. Pretty sad that Academy might have more than our Bass Pro has. Slim pickings around here for tackle!

Try the fluke on the dinky rig (mini c-rig) and hang on it gives it somewhat of a slow fall and changes the way it darts through the water when you twitch it. Bonus is that it does not hang up as much as a c-rig and can be fished extremely shallow or deep. Also if you change the angle that you put your hook in your fluke you can make it do a dart in spiral action which gives it a more realistic dying bait fish look very effective in late fall. good luck

What makes it such a great bait is its variability in retrieval speeds and techniques; that, and the fact that it can be fished throughout the water column from the surface to the bottom. It also helps that with most riggings, it is pretty weedless.
Would I use it over other presentations if the bass are feeding on the bottom? Likely not as I'd switch to something like a T-Rigged worm or a jig.
My all seasons favorite is a 4" Keitech Shad Impact (essentially a soft jerk bait) on a 3/0 hook with a CPS screw pin, thrown weightless. But, as a kayak angler, I am fishing shallow water most of the time. The idea shared regarding adding a bell weight onto the hook would be a great idea in many circumstances where you need to increase the fall rate, fish it deeper.
If I had a single tip to share, it'd be that what works for me is to fish it very, very slowly. Yes, it'd drive many anglers nuts.
Brad

In the spring and early summer throw a Sinko 10-15 cast then fluke then the Brush hog. It's amazing how the better bite changes from day to day. Put a small split shot right on the nose of the fluke and it will stand tail up better and catch more fish. Then there are days a june bug (dark purple) color change wins. Basically a brush hog (1/8 Shakey head ) catches more. A large Sinko catches bigger.
