Im taking my buddy and his 7yr old son fishing Sundee. They have been on the boat a couple of times to catch eater blues and Jr has done well reeling in fish up to 5 lbs. Now he sez he is ready to catch something bigger. We dont have a ton of big fish in my lake but Im hoping I can put him on some teeners or a 20lbr for his first big fish. Heck, it would make my day if he hung a 10lbr. What are some of you guys experiences with fishing with a 7 yr old by boat??

If he's like most other 7yo boys, take you some hot wheels cars and such for him to play with while waiting or when he gets a bit bored. Take lots of snacks he likes as well, whatever he chooses to go to for a snack when at home, take that with you.

Thanks amigo! The kid loves to fish...last trip he sat right next to me and asked a million questions. He reeled in 15 dinks and was wanting to stay longer to try and get something big. He is one of those kids who would fish all day if you let him. We wont stay long if the fish dont cooperate.

You know I can spit, piss, and yell with the best of em Tom! Last 2 trips he wouldnt touch a toy. He said he would rather watch the poles and talk fishin with uncle Chris. The kid is fascinated with it and its all he wants to talk about for 4 hrs straight. He wants to know why we are looking for a certain bait to why I scale and cut my bait a certain way. He now knows how to read a graph and tells us when were drifting over fish! Lmao!!! I hope my son has half the interest in fishing as this kid.

I took my boys (6 years old) fishing with (Capt. Jack) Jack Wiggins on Lewisville and they had a blast. Just being out on the boat was pure excitement for them. Snacks and drinks is all we needed. Oh and of course a good guide to put them on fish. We mainly fished for whites and hybrids, but once we started drifting for the blues they started snacking and getting restless. Jack would then just start up the boat and move to another spot and they were fine.

My last trip out included a 7 yo. I told him we needed to catch perch for bait. We wound up spending most of the day watching him yank perch from underneath a beached barge. We only fished for cats for about an hour before we headed back to the ramp. His highlight was I let him drive the boat back to the marina (with much adult supervision).
He is truly a sick individual.

Keep him warm. The cold (this weekend is forecast to be mild) makes their hands and feet hurt and wears them out. Mittens keep hands warmer than gloves--'course gloves have the "cool" factor.

Thanks again Amigos!! Big wind change out of the north at sunrise Sunday Im not liking but the weather will be pleasant. Well be looking in some deep holes in and submerged ponds in 35 ft where I been seeing sandbass stacked and big cats with em. Were gonna check 3 or 4 holes and see if the big fish are around them then well move out and drift around the channel. Were going big or going home!

This time of year when Im drifting I like a bait about as big as my hand and about 10 long for my 2 outside rods. I use a stinger rig for the 2 big baits. When you hang one on those rods you know its a good fish... I go about half that size on my inside rods but still a big ol slab of bait. I like my baits big enough so that anything under 10lbs just knocks it around. We dont hook many but the ones we do are gonna be decent size. When you fish with bigger bait you dont have to worry about not having bait on the hook or rebaiting every hour. Big bait will stay on your hook all day and catch fish after fish on the same bait. If Im fishing a better fishery like Twok I run baits even bigger. I know a lot of guys hammer the big fish on smaller baits like threads but I only downsize if everything is laying on the bottom lockjawed or if there has been a big shadkill. Just my preference
