First trip this upcoming weekend, never seen it. Tired of getting our teeth kicked in on the East Texas lakes we frequently fish. Any general info. or tips would be greatly appreciated. Also, first time to fish a power plant lake and not sure what to expect. Again, any assistance would be greatly appreciated. Thank You

Just follow one of the many lake fork guides.

If you cant catch on Welsh, then quit fishing.

Guys hiring guides on Welsh is a joke. Not popular but the truth.

put the trolling motor down after launching and start fishing. the trees are VERY hard, so don't run on pad unless you know where you are going. most the guides are there and keeping it quiet for now.

Do a search on this site for Welsh information. There have been several marked "maps" posted in the past. Some of these mark "boat lanes" and others areas to fish. Lake is full now so some of the stumps in the main lake area are safely underwater.

SkeeterRonnie is correct, the cove where the boat ramp is has got some fish in it as does the large cove just north and west of the ramp. He is also right that the trees are very hard. Ask GTrigg about the stumps. He was with me when I put a hole in my boat the past January.

Just don't run on the lake, even if it looks clear. Follow someone.

Weightless flukes around grass edges.

Tons of grass, comes out to about14 feet. Split shot flukes or senkos on the edges and pockets. Punch with a craw or baby brush hog. Clear towards the dam, but be very careful at the power lines. Stumps and VERY SHALLOW rock pile on the right of lane. Stumps on the left as well. Going tomorrow ,o maybe more info to follow.

Will be out next Monday. Generally punching grass or fishing just off the edges of the grass. Bit worried a north wind is coming on Monday so hopefully that doesn't change the bite.

Last week I found some good fish above the ramp, mid-lake in the shallow water (1.5 ft to 2 ft) flats on the east bank. There is lots of grass in that area, but drag you a c-rigged lizard through the sparse patches and have fun.

Here's the best of the bunch:

And yes, Welch will sure punch a hole in the bottom of a boat as AllenBassFisher said.... thumb

With Monti going down, this is definitely the question.

I fished out there today and when I launched this morning there were about 15 rigs in parking lot. I got on the water around 8:00AMish. A few less than that when I loaded out this afternoon. Saw some creative parking that would have screwed up some folks had it been more crowded. Also noticed everyone had their game face on. Tried to offer a couple of good mornings and good afternoons as I launched and loaded as well as when a few guys cut me off. Guess everyone was super serious and all swoll up. I mean after all it is fishing and all so you gotta be damn serious about it. roflmao

Had zero desire to play bumper boats at the discharge so I caught a few just dragging a Texas rig out on the points in 1-10' of water. Problem with that though is when you caught one or two it seemed other boats needed to be right where you were.....Caught some on the edge of the grass as well but no size to those. Finally tied on a 5" and a 7" weedless swimbait and would idle into any small cover with grass, drop the Power Poles and just fan cast it over the tops of the grass and just slow roll it back in. Turned out to be the best choice for me. Caught a bunch and caught some good ones that way.. Best thing is I had those spots to myself. Decent day out there and had fun.

lol i was there today too! couldn't help but notice the same things you mentioned roflmao I said hi to a few guys, pretty sure i was the only one with a Nitro on the water. 12 skeeter trailers in the lot when i pulled up around 0730. I stuck with the T-rig most of the day dragging points, few on traps too. I really thought about putting the swimbait on and i never did, reading your post was a total slap in the face for myself bang i even told my partner "i think I'm gonna tie a swim bait on" probably 5 or 6 times. Needed something to fish that grass effectively. Im not used to so much vegetation, was my first time there. Plan to get back soon!

Saturdays maybe not a good idea. Someone posted in tournament section weekly Sat. tournaments through December thats averaging 15-20 boats per tournament. There gos a majority of available parking.

Just wait you will have to park on the shoulder of the highway before long on Saturdays.
Our bass club has a tourney every December then the Saturday Open's that Team Bass puts on and mix in a Dallas area club or two and you have a real mess. Seen this the past couple of years and Monti was still going at that time!

If youve never been to Welsh the parking lot holds maybe 30 rigs,if everybody parks straight, good luck with that. Its also a one lane ramp. If your looking for a East Texas power plant lake to fish I would go to Martin Creek. JMO

Mark - this has been the "pattern" on Monti for the past 5 years and was progressively getting worse until they shut down the plant. Don't get me wrong I still get cut off and come in on plenty on Monti but nothing like it was before this year. I won't hit Welsh at any point this winter for these reasons but will go next Summer when no one else dares to go in the heat and the fishing can be off the chain.

I like Welsh, but will never understand why people all fight over 2lb fish. You don't have to cut in on people to catch numbers at welsh LOL

It was not as bad as I made it sound. I try to keep a sense of humor about it all. The people being ultra serious out there was for real though. It's a small lake so i expect people to be close by etc. All in all it was a fun day and glad I got to spend it on the water.

I figured. I will say most the people on Monti don't do the serious thing. I just hate how fast my boat gets surrounded when i happen to catch a good one. Heck, I've had several guides do it. My response is always the same. i just pick up the trolling motor and move. You can catch fish on every inch of both of these lakes at times.

Don't think Fairfield is a power plant lake anymore.

Me personally, I prefer power plant lakes hotter it is. Less people and way better bite

After fishing Monti for 30 years on the day after thanksgiving we went to Welsh this year. Water temps were mid 70s at discharge, to shallow end, mid 60s at dam.

Caught most of our fish in mid lake area, dead sticking a split shot senko was best for the entire day but we had random blow ups on buzzbaits and frogs on windy banks, and it was windy and rainy for half the day.

Yep, this winter Monti is down, and out and gone.

Turn out the lights the party's over.
