About 6 weeks ago I cleaned up what green pecans the squirrels had chewed up and it was only around 10lbs. Now that the leaves have cleared enough from the trees I have no pecans at all for harvest. I am ok with it because I do not have the choir of picking them up this year. In the 14 years here I have all ways had 30 or 40lbs to harvest. About ever third year I would have 75 or 100lbs from 5 trees.
Anyone else have this luck.

Don

Since you can't harvest pecans, it might be time to harvest squirrels, in hopes of having more pecans next year..

Ive got two pecan trees in my backyard. Squirrels have had their way for numerous years. As you said, they shred the pecans while still in the green shell. I decided to fight back this year and trapped 30 or so. I won the battle but not the war. I finally surrendered and they still got most of my pecans. I was able to scrounge and pick up a small grocery bag full.

Shooting them is not an option in my neighborhood. I wish it was. Ill get after them again next year. It keeps me and the dog entertained. LOL.

West side of General Motors. 57 yr old sud division with many pecan trees.
My trees did not produce a 1/5 what they normally do each year. I am ok with it because not have to pick them up this year is a relief to me.

I'm a little bummed. We rented this house in the hopes we would have pecans out of the huge old pecan tree in the back yard. Lots of squirrels but no nuts.

Don't walk under the live oaks though. Especially on a windy day. Those acorns HURT!

I've got 11 mature pecan trees and several smaller trees. They did not produce enough to even bother with. Last year was a great
year. We are still using them from last year and gave several pounds away to friends.

In the city, I had a neighbor that was determined to get at least one pecan off the tree in his yard.
He declared war on the squirrels. On a cold morning, you could see over 20 of them running around at once.
For the next year, he trapped and relocated over 200 before he got a handful of pecans.

I have 3 Pecan trees on my property and for the last couple of years we got tons of pecans, some my wife still has in some 5 gallon buckets. For some reason this year we have gotten almost none.

I have a buddy who had a water leak that ran most of a year without him noticing it. Auto paid the bill I guess and didn't keep an eye on it.
He got 5 times as many pounds of pecans off those 2 trees that year as his best ever year before that. I don't remember the number, but it was crazy number of lbs.
Pecans take a lot of water. He never really waters them extra on purpose and they always produce way better in wet years than dry.

I do not remember if it was a late cold front or what, but none of the trees around us had any pecans. Even the native pecan trees have no pecans.

That is basically the way they water in commercial pecan orchards. The entire orchard is sectioned off by berms which they flood a couple times a year.
