I have 1999 Triton Tr17 bass boat and my trailer coupler is wearing out. I would like to replace it but there is a problem. It is welded on to the tongue of the boat trailer. Should I just take it to a trailer shop or replace the whole tongue? Im confused. Ive looked up and down on the internet but cant find anything. Its 35 inches in total, 18 inches inside the trailer, 3 1/2 inches by 2 1/2 inches of tongue Thanks in advanced!

If you haven't fixed it already just carry the tongue to a welding shop and they can replace the hitch....easy job.

Why do you think it's wearing out? I have trailers that are up to 40 years old and the couplers are not wearing out.

First question is this ^^^^ Second go to home depot by a cheap grinder grind it off, buy a new trailer coupler and bolt it on if your trying to save money. If you don't care take it to a welding shop like said above. Would be a really easy fix for someone with a welder, if you know any buddies buy em a 12 pack and get r done.

Ive never seen a hitch wear out, but that style hitch is junky anyway. You probably just need to adjust the tention on the spring for the latch. If it is a removable tongue, i would take it up there and have one of these put on. Doesnt have to be that heavy, but that style is the best.

Get a UFP squared up tongue. Be much happier.

Appreciate the advice from everyone! Its not a necessity but would like to get it switched out. Its not falling apart but super annoying. I just have to get everything lined up exact. I have a buddy that has a different style coupler on a pheonix/ trailer and its super simple.

I would agree with you , but then we would both be WRONG !!!!!

Come on man....what is "wearing" out? I have never seen a coupler "wear" out, I have seen many that needed just a little dry lube on them. So come on, tell me what you think is wearing out.
PS: line up issue is not coupler problem, it's a driver problem.

Adjust the tension nut on the bottom side, clean, and lube it. Will drop on the ball much easier.

i took my old boat trailer hitch to a trailer repair and parts place in mt pleasant, it was wore out, had a hard time getting it to latch and then when I did it didnt want to unlatch. I could have probaly jacked with it but didnt like that pos cheap style of hitch, So took it and upgraded.. Just about any trailer dealer can fix it for you or any welding shop.. cheap fix..do yourself a favor and Dont put that same cheap hitch back on it

It's lack of maintenance, as in lubricated!

Why do you think it's wearing out? I have trailers that are up to 40 years old and the couplers are not wearing out. That's a good question. Boat trailers typically don't see much use compared to trailers being used daily for work, the only trouble I have had with boat hitches is the latch. Most trailers come with a POS hitch to begin with. I have worn out a few other hitches over the years, most notably one on my 36' flatbed. It got to where it would pop off the ball when loading a tractor if you didn't chain the trailer to the bumper. I thought it was the ball, so I got a new ball and the problem still existed. I also had a 32' cattle trailer wear out, it wore thru the top cap and the latch landed on the bed. these trailers were like 9-10 years old when they did this, and I used a little moly on them as well.
