Thinking of treating myself this year to a new fish finder but unsure of which way to go. Have a Helix 10 behind the console now and not really happy with it. Planning to put it up front if I can figure out how to mount that transducer to my Terrova. Actually thinking about going back with Lowrance however I have owned both and had issues with each. The Lowrance I had in the past fritzed out after a rainstorm and the Hummingbird I have now lacks definition and that's after trying every setting imaginable. My old Lowrance I think was a better unit as far as actual fish and structure identification but worried about quality issues in the build. Supposedly the Hummingbird Mega imaging is legit but not sure I want to spend that kind of dough to find out otherwise. Certain the new Lowrance imaging is on point but don't want to have it go ca-put on me after 2.5 years.

I have done both Humminbird and Lowrance, as well as humminbird with Lowrance together (my current situation that I am about to rectify). I even had a Garmin on a flatbottom boat your a few months as well.

I can tell you that of those above mentioned setups my least favorite has been the Humminbird and Lowrance together. I have Mega HB on the console and Gen 3 HDS on the bow and just for positioning purposes alone, it sucks. The added frustration of not being on the spot I want is not worth the slightly better 2D of the Lowrance. the SI and DI are significantly better on the HB as well, and I like to be able to switch charts from Navionics to Lakemaster depending on the lake (obviously the Lowrance wont take the Lakemaster chart).

The network ability of staying in the same family is completely worth it in my opinion. Of course networking will add to the cost of your setup, but again, it is absolutely worth it when locating the perfect spot.

If you are looking to save a little money you might want to check out the trade and swap section on BBC. I am sure it is unpopular opinion to buy used electronics, but I have had great luck with the units I have bought and I find that a lot of guys sale stuff on there all the time and prefer to keep a reputation rather than screw someone over.

Plus you can network 2 helix units for under $100

Do you have the HD transducer for your Helix 10? I was not very impressed with my helix 9 when I was using the provided transducer, once I upgraded transducers to the HD transducer for around $150 the quality of images are much clearer. I just dont understand that when you spend $1,000 plus on a graph and they dont even provide you with the transducer that provides the picture quality that they advertise. I am happy with both my Helix 9s now that I am running the HD transducer.

When I was younger and had no money, I had to stick my head in the water and see if I could see the bottom, I was the human depth finder

Here is a link to the HD transducer, if this is the transducer you already have on your boat then I would suggest trying a Garmin unit, the picture on a Garmin is clear out of the box.
