For you guys that love to throw hard jerkbaits. Do you tie directly to a split ring or thard non-slip loop knot w/o a split ring? Is there a significant difference in the bait action btw the two ways?.

I do use a loop knot; but very infrequently and if I do, I tie a doubled line loop knot to the split ring the jerk bait came with.

I water balance all my jerkbaits with the split ring on. Removing the split ring would affect the tuning

The traditional non slip loop knot is a relatively weak knot. Throwing a jerkbait on 8lb test around cover with a traditional non slip loop knot is a recipe for heart break

Does a loop knot enhance subtle side to side wobbling and rolling; sure, but only rarely to such an extent that it would make a big difference in catch rate

I haven't done this on jerkbaits but have on jigs saltwater fishing. Try tying a solid O ring to your line and use split ring pliers to attach to the lure. It gives the same motion as a loop knot without the breakpoint of a knot. It's also relatively easy to change lures.

Straight to the split ring and no loop knot. If you tie a loop knot with light line it'll slip out of the split ring sometimes. I've done a lot of tinkering and trial & error with jerkbaits. I don't really notice a difference between a loop knot or a regular knot.

Don't wasted your time trying to tie the loop knot each time. Not to knock the people that do by any means, but there's not a measurable difference in just tying to the split ring. If you are more confident with the loop knot, then DO WHAT YOU ARE CONFIDENT IN, but in a tournament situation, or where you have limited time, this takes up precious amounts of it.

That said, I've gotten them with no split ring, thrown them, and caught just as many fish. It's more about how and where you present the bait than anything else.

You can have the most expensive and beautiful knot in the world, but if you aren't putting it in a fishes face, it will do you no good.

No loop knot for me. It is a weak knot like mentioned above probably 60% strength of the line test. Tie directly to the split ring on the bait with a palomar and let er rip.

Jerkbait is my favorite lure to throw. I have one tied on year round. And I do tie a loop knot. I dont use anything other than 12lb red label. Its thin enough for me. I've caught hundreds upon hundreds on a jerkbait up to 9.5 And have never had a knot failure. I tie the loop knot directly to the split ring that cMe with the bait. I tinker quit often with different hook and split ring sizes and numbers to get a bait to perform the way I want it. Great thing about having a swimming pool around. Yall can say a loop knot doesnt help but like stated I believe it does so I'll keep throwing it. I even throw it on all my hard body topwaters also.

Saltwater everything I throw is tied with a loop knot. Gives a jighead a lot more action.

+1 I world never tie a loop knot on a vision 110 or pointer I think the split ring works just fine.

I gain a little extra action by using a speed clip attached to the split ring. Just a personal preference I guess... if for some reason I dont have any speed clips I just do a palomar direct to the split ring.

I always remove the split ring and tie a loop knot to the eye.....crankbaits and jerkbaits. Personal preference sure, but I just do not trust the line moving and slipping into the split ring and weakening it.

I think the Megabass 110s fish much better with the split rings on.

He's right, you know. He's an old, and olds catch fish! I used to use a snap when throwing the old smithwick rogues that didn't suspend. Lost a few good fish with the snaps opening so went strictly to tying to split rings. 90% of my jerkbait fishing now is with suspended baits. That bait has to sit just right to maximize bites, and I believe anything with weight will hinder the action and life-like movement, or dead looking appearance. Vision 110's and LC's are all I throw anymore. But I will say the last couple of years have stunk for jerkin'. Anyone else feel the same?

I'd rather be an old than a young pushing up daises. Youngs just better hope they become olds. By the way olds comes before you are ready for it.

When I moved to Houston they would have guides come and speak at CCA meetings, and the overwhelming majority of them said that you MUST tie a loop knot to get the best bait action. I have had loop knots slip down tight on the eye or ring, but I have never had one completely fail (come undone). This is with a fluorocarbon shock leader tied to braid.
